I installed XPe evaluation tools and I'm trying to run the Target designer
for the 1st time ever, my 1st XPe build ever, yoohoo!
Anyway, it fails with the following error:
=====
The CMI encountered an unexpected error from the Win32 subsystem. For more
information see the application event log.
=====
What can I do? Any tip welcome!
BTW I found this link:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/forumarchives/WindowsXPembedded/Oct2005/post24697202....
But we don't have a windows network and we don't have network admin as far
as I can tell, hence I can't login as a network admin (which seems to solve
the problem according to the article).
Also when I right click on the Target designer icon, I don't have the "Run
As administrator" option... :-(
What can I do?

Is there a knowledge base article on building XPE images that don't include
any export-controlled technologies (i.e. components that can't be exported
outside the US without an export license).
Thanks

I finally got a bootable El Torito disk that seemed to work fine, but after
I removed the HD FAT partition I used to create the CD image the CD no
longer boots! (Well, it gets to the point of displaying the 3 horizontal
blue bars with the XP logo and then hangs there - it never proceeds to the
"Welcome" screen or my shell.)
Please don't tell me that the HD FAT partition has to be there to boot the
CD! How can I use this to initialize virgin systems if that's the case?
Any community wisdom here?
Thanks,
Dean

If I add the Windows Explorer application to my image but I'm NOT using the
explorer shell, when I invoke it I do not see the Toolbar that lists "File
Edit View Favorites...". Does anyone know what I have to add to get it?
Thanks.

Hi,
I have a problem with DHCP Client Service component in an XPe image. I
need to request the target hostname to a DHCP Server, but I don't know
how to configure the option 12 on the DHCP request.
I have seen on this component some registry entries in the following
path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters
\Options\
Below this path, there are some values for each option, but I don't
know the right data configuration of KeyType (REG_DWORD) and
RegLocation(REG_MULTI_SZ) for option 12.
Does anybody know these configurations?.
In addition, I don't know if once I have received the hostname, I
could set it without a machine reboot. Does anybody know how can I set
a new hostname on XPe without a reboot?
Thanks in advance.
Ruben

I never ever installed an embeded device, yet I'm the .NET expert in our
company.
Now both comes to play as I advocated WPF application and we would like to
use it, yet we are woeking with diskless touchscreen with 1GB of memory.
I though that XPe should be our OS of choice, but then, it seems, XPe only
supports .NET2
(according to: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/embedded/aa731258.aspx)
I found it incredible, the MicroFramework does support it, how come not XPe?
Anyway what could be my solution? Any tip?
How could I use WPF on an embeded device?

I want to use the psexec utility from sysinternals on my device running xp
embedded. What components do I need to make this possible?
I started adding file sharing and the client for ms networks, but I get the
error message that the $Admin share does not exist on my target machine.
However when I run psexec on a device with xp professional, this works fine.
Maybe someone already created an SLD file for these pstools from
sysinternals ?

I have set rundll32 netshell.dll HrRenameConnection to run as a first
boot agent generic command. I was then trying to configure the ip
address for it and it was failing everytime. I finally figured out that
command wasn't giving the network ports there default name. I know it
isn't working because I outputted the text of it into a text file to
show me the interface names after it is run and I got this:
Admin State State Type Interface Name
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enabled Dedicated
{73E49643-983F-451F-A661-C3D46055F8EF}
Enabled Dedicated
{F1D214A8-E7FD-4D38-87EC-475D40579F73}
Enabled Internal Internal
Enabled Loopback Loopback
Yet when windows runs explorer.exe, it will then name them for me. But
then I can't have them be configured on first boot. Here is the command
I'm using to name them and then output the interfaces to check:
%%11%%\cmd.exe /c %%11%%\Rundll32.exe %%11%%\netshell.dll HrRenameConnection
>> C:\1.txt
