How Does EWF Deal with Corrupted Files?

Author: Gabriel K.
Date: Feb 8, 2008 16:34

Imagine we have a system with a
-protected C: drive
-unprotected D: drive (created during FBA)

Once it's up and running, let's say we have files that have been modified
and stored on the new unprotected volume. What happens or how does EWF deal
with the following:

A file on D: has become corrupted. Does it by default ignore the file and
then look in C: for the same file? I figured that EWF works by using a set
of file pointers that points to the modifed (new) files on the unprotected
volume.

Installing .NET 3.5 (don't install .NET 2.0 as a XPe component if you want to install .NET 3.5)

Author: Smedly Tonker
Date: Feb 8, 2008 05:07

I've been attempting to install .NET 3.5 for the last couple of days and
this is what I have learned. If you installed .NET 2.0 component as part of
the rollup update or 2007 or 2008 feature preview you will run into problem
installing .NET 3.5 because .NET 3.5 requires .NET 2.0 be uninstalled and
.NET 2.0 SP1 to replace it. It is the uninstall that is the sticking point.
Here is the error message that it generates in MSI error log while trying to
install .NET 2.0 SP1:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 -- Setup has determined that
this version of .NET Framework is part of your operating system and cannot
be installed or uninstalled with this setup. Use Windows Update for all
future updates to .NET Framework. Setup will now exit.

After I read this error message I decided to consult the .NET install guru
to see what workarounds my exist. Mine and his comments are blogged here
(towards the bottom of the blog):

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/01/03/6973356.aspx?CommentPosted=tru...#commentmessage

Now I have not yet tried to use the .NET cleanup tool I spoke about with the
.NET install guru, so their still might be hope of NOT having to regenerate
my XPe image. So if this works I'll post the results back to the news
group.

New to designing targets : device drivers

Author: Martin Dowie
Date: Feb 8, 2008 05:02

Hi,
First time WinXPe user with a "how to" question.

We are developing an embedded device with Flash as the storage media. Our
development rig uses an HDD and we have WinXP Pro installed on this. We
generated our DEVICES.PMQ file and we've started to define a target. 4 of the
board devices drivers need to be included in the final image but are not
supported out-of-the-box by the WinXPe Toolkit. Unfortunately none of them
come with a nice simple .inf file to generate a new component from to create
a new component from.

I was wondering that as we will nee to perform the FBA boot of our WinXPe
image on the HDD development rig anyway, could I just create a component that
lists the .exe setup files as RunOnce "Extra Resources" and install them then?

We're looking (as ever!) for a quick solution but repeatable - it doesn't
have to be the "nicest" or the "one true WinXPe way".

TIA

Martin

  IE7

Author: Richard
Date: Feb 8, 2008 03:58

Hi,

I am pretty much a neohpyte to XPe so please be gentle...

We are planning on rolling out HP T5720 terminals running XPe. All
applications will be delivered via Citrix bar the use of Internet Explorer
for an internal training application which for various reasons needs to be
run locally. To ensure forward compatibility I'd like to rollout the clients
(about 400 of them) with IE7 installed so there is no messing about later.

Is there an easy way of doing this yet? All the articles I can find on the
internet seem to entail completely rebuilding the OS image with software that
can only be downloaded from the Windows embedded extranet, which I don't have
access to.

Also how do people go about hotfixing a stock of XPe based machines?

TIA

Richard

IIS Admin failed to start with error code 2146893818 after fbreseal

Author: Godzilla
Date: Feb 8, 2008 02:06

Hello,

I have been trying to find a solution to a problem where I cannot
restart the IIS Admin service after I performed a "fbreseal.exe -
keepall". I have been trying some suggestion of restarting msdtc and
reset its log files, but to no avail... I cannot restart the IIS using
the command "iisreset /restart", it says the service is being
disabled. But it is not according to "services.msc"! I just can't
start the service up again!

For more info, I am using FBWF, but before I reseal the image, I turn
FBWF off.

Please HELP!

EWF USB RAM REG -> Wrong Volume Protected

Author: Stefan Pflaume (XPe)
Date: Feb 7, 2008 07:30

Hello,

I installed a USB Stick with EWF Ram Reg.

After enable EWF everything is OK.

The USB Stick is protected, and I get a positive feedback from the
ewfmgnr.exe

Then I have added an internal RAID for Video Data.

Now EWF is protecting the Raid Volume and not the USB Stick.

I tried to change the ArcName in the registry, but after

"Rundll ewfdll.dll ConfigureEwf" this values changes back to 0/0/0/1.

Is there a way to change the EWF to protect the USB Stick, even after adding
a HD?

Should I use VolumeID in the Registry, and how to find the ID of the USB
Stick?

The boot.ini is still pointing to 0/0/0/1! But I think this is the RAID?!

Thank you for any tip!

Kind Regards

Stefan

Feature Requests: More Compact ASCII Target Designers .SLX Files

Author: Markus Pietrek
Date: Feb 6, 2008 23:39

Hello folks,

when working with the target designer I always have found that the .SLX
Files in the current way are unable to be handled in a version control
system.

Therefore I'd suggest a few changes

o .SLX files are either binary or ascii. Please provide different
extensions, one for binary and one for ASCII. If a file is opened in
ASCII format, "Save" should store it again in that format...

  Launching ncpa.cpl with custom shell

Author: aflynt
Date: Feb 6, 2008 21:28

Having read through some past posts on this subject, my impression is
that the ncpa.cpl (network connections control panel) cannot be
launched independently if you are using a custom shell. You can launch
it by double clicking the "Network Connections" icon from the control
panel, but opening it from code or the command line with "control.exe
ncpa.cpl" will not work.

Before I go crazy and recreate the entire Network Connections UI with
C# and WMI I just want to make absolutely sure that my assumption is
correct, and this is still not possible.
