WD passport drive Issue - 160 GB WD

Hello all,

Just joined the community and I hope someone can help me. Before I
formated my windows XP my 160GB wd passport external hard drive was
working just fine. I had some issues with my laptop and it was beyond
my understanding, so i brought it to a computer shop. The guy fixed it
and reinstalled windows xp and the computer is not detecting the
external drive. Actually when i plug it in , i can see it as a
removeable drive but i cannot see it in My computer.... some people
told me to assign a letter and a path....but actually i don't have any
options for that. It's wierd because i can see it in the device list
but i can't access it or even see it in My computer.

Thank you

Well this is a forum for writing device drivers, but you might right click
on "My Computer" go to "Manage" and then choose "Disk Management" if the
drive shows up right clicking on the drive allows you to set the drive
letter.

Hello, sorry to post this in the wrong thread... I don't have any
options to assign a letter to the external drive.... it's just says :
Disc 2 - Basic-Online... that's it...when i right click the device...
i don't have any options for changing the letter or the path of the
drive...

You misunderstood Don. He did not say you need to format, he said it, the
drive, is NOT formatted. To rectify the situation you will have to create
and format a partition. Why did your drive go into Nirvana? Good question,
and about the only answer is "It happens", unless the Geek you took things
too did something evil wicked and nasty. You did not indicate he/she/it
getting their grubby little hands on the external drive, so that may the
least likely cause for drive failure. You might find a good buddy that will
allow you plug your drive into their system, back up your data and then
scrub it clean with a new partition on your system.

Hello Gary,

Thanks for your post. I did not bring my external drive to get fixed, i
only brought my computer... the guy formatted my computer and now it
doesn't recognize it anymore... I can see it as a removable drive..but
i can't access it or see it in my computer. I tried to connect it to a
different computer and same thing... it will not see it....

I never touch the external drive ... it's wierd...
