Right click the Taskbar> Properties> Taskbar tab> Select Hide Icons>
Customize button> Click on the Safely Remove Hardware Icon> Select "Always
Hide" for that Icon> APPLY/OK your way out.

from the Notification Area? I like to keep my desktop tidy, and I'd rather

I have a USB scanner connected all the time, so it never goes away.
