Re: Shared Documents Folder

Author: NL12143

I've had problems with this many times. Basically it's an issue with every
new build PC. It's a major design flaw in XP as I.M.H.O.

FIRST, I would like to mention to the MS people that it should be made
possible to arrange this from within the system. Just like with My Documents.
And no, the tool XP Tweak doesn't do a proper job in redefining Shared
Documents !

It is a serious design error to combine the My Document (that is secure DATA
!) folders together with all the crap in Temp etc. (that is deletable !!!).

In order to keep the system running lean & clean it is a goof idea to keep
the C: disk small (fast defrag). Large (shared) data as MP'3 and MPG's should
be stored on a separate disk D: (or partition).

SECOND. One should be very precise in moving the Shared Documents to another
place. The indication is hidden away in the registry at various places (could
explain why Media Player still looks at the wrong place ?). Check the
articles very carefully.

Chuck

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having exactly the same problem. The
only time the walpaper will show is when I'm shutting down or logging off.

Or, left-click somewhere in the control panel, and press the App key (the one between the Right-Windows key and the Right-Control
key), or else press Shift-F10 if no App key. Lots of ways to right-click. ;)
>> I have no idea why it changed...any idea on how to get it to sort alpha?

When you open the Control Panel, go up to the menu, then click View->Arrange Icons by->Name.

Where did you learn the Bags format? Is it documented anywhere?

Wow, why does Microsoft make things like this so difficult?

RE: Save directory listing as file

Author: Visit the Sky

Thanks for the advice and help.

Some of the suggestions only sent the list directly to a printer, not to a
file.
Some required scripting, which is (1) over my head and (2) supposedly turned
off on my computer.
Most revealed (to me) valuable sources of information.

Some of those sources, plus some searching, plus re-igniting some long-lost
memories, plus a fair bit of trial and error, led me to this relatively
simple solution:

In Windows, click start, then run, type in "cmd" (no quotes), and hit enter.
Then, use the old DOS dir command with a redirect. Simple example:
dir c:\ > c:\C-DirectoryListing.txt

When you've confirmed your output.txt (or whatever name you gave it) file,
type exit to get out of command mode.

The DOS dir command does have some restrictions and limitations, but it is
modifiable in terms of number and types of folders\files to check,
attributes, sort order, and time field, and wild cards can be used.

I found this (and more) information at:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dir...

It's not documented anywhere that I know of. By the time I started playing with XP, the info
regarding deletion of Bags & BagMRU to reset views was out there. Using the 'Also apply this
template to subfolders' option created the 'Inherit' subkey for a particular bag. It was when I was
using RegMon that I saw that Explorer checked the Inherit key for all the various view settings, not
just 'FolderType' and 'Logo' that I had my "Aha!" moment :)
