Corrupted Desktop - White Border on the left...

One of our users has a corrupted desktop. On the left handside of his desktop
there is a white panel about 2" across the screen - it is very similar to the
typical Explorer side pane (like when you're browsing files).

There are tabs for:

"Folder Tasks"
"Other Places"
"Details"

However, this white border pushes the entire desktop to the right, even the
"Start" button.
Has anyone managed to fix this? We would normally have to reset the user's
profile, however, that is very time consuming and would like to check if
there is a way to actually fix this.

I can send a screenshot of the border if it helps.

Also, the user has no permissions to the display tab to change anything -
infact, almost everything is locked down.

Any input appreciated.

Sounds a bit like the Common Tasks pane -

Try -
Click Start, select Run and type in:
regsvr32 /i shell32
Press okay, Reboot

otherwise perhaps

Correct the Registry setting when the Common Tasks pane appears on the WinXP
Desktop.
