Agreed.
I sort of see why they do it, esp in the case of so-called system files
but I object to it also. It doesn't make sense to be calling apples
oranges though, no matter how I look at it. I suspsect in way too many
instance the code author was also the technical writer, and whoever had
to vet those had no idea what it was about anyway,

I normally use PowerDesk Pro which is very functional and useful; pretty
well integrated into several things including the context menues. Have
heard of Salamander but I'm quite happy with PD, but thanks...

  2 questions

Author: Sammy Castagna
Date: Sep 18, 2008 19:23

I would like to ask two questions. I had to do a reinstall of windows xp.
About two years some one helped me get rid of the windows splash screen. It
just showed drivers and different files loading very fast in black and
white. I thought I did something to the registry but I cant remember. I
tried MSCONFIG bootini sos this works but not correctly,

Question 2
I have changed my windows xp to the classic windows style and use the
classic start window. I get a log on screen when windows is starting up. I
am the only one using the computer and only the administrator account is
turned on. I tried tweak windows and checked the auto logon but it only
works one time

Sammy Castagna Thank you

  Moving documents and settings folder to another partition

Author: Allgaeu-Tobias
Date: Sep 17, 2008 23:25

I know this has been asked many time before, but I can’t find the
answer.

I want to move "C:\Documents and Settings" to
"D:\Documents and Settings".
I followed carefully all the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314843/en-us under
"Moving the entire folder".
But after a reboot the registry keys and values point again to
"C:\Documents and Settings".

Kindest Regards,
Tobias Heilig

  Standard desktop backgrounds disappeared

Author: Dave Mosbruger

I want to temporarily change my Desktop background to one of the standard
Windows XP background elements. To my surprise, the list of available
backgrounds includes a very large number of "My Pictures" image files and
most of the standard XP background elements are missing. How do I restore the
original list of background elements? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  Windows XP Won't Show Default Web Page Colors Anymore

Author: Pat Cook
Date: Sep 17, 2008 13:54

Hi everyone:

I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to find what could be causing
this and how to fix this but DESPITE having gone back to the Windows XP
default settings, I **CANNOT** seem to get EITHER of my browsers to show
the colors of the pages I visit on the web.

I dunno what I did, but I can NO LONGER see backgrounds. Here's a list
of the browsers I have and their builds...

* Mozilla Firefox - Version 3.0.1 (My default browser)
* Internet Explorer - Version 7.0.5730.1315 (Additional info. available
on request)
* Mozilla SeaMonkey - Version 1.1 Build 11
* Netscape Navigator - Version 9.0.0.6
* Opera - Version 9.26 Build 8835
* Apple Safari - Version 3.1.2 Build 525.21
* Google Chrome - Version 0.2.149.29 Build 1798

In addition, I have the old MSN Explorer AS WELL AS Windows Live, three
IE clones (Avant, Free Source & ProgrammableTabBrowser) & one Firefox
clone (Flock).

  will not enter safe mode

I'm having trouble accessing my safe mode. As soon as it comes to entering
my password to get into my account, the system suddenly reboots and I don't
get a chance to enter safe mode. Any way to fix this so it doesn't reboot on
me automatically? TIA

  Pointer Scheme

Author: Snake
Date: Sep 16, 2008 04:10

When I click to apply any new pointer scheme nothing changes the cursors
stays the same. The PC is connected to a network but that shouldn't matter I
guess. Also the snap to and adjusted speed settings only apply till I
shutdown the PC?

  Task bar properties notification area

I can no longer customize the icons. When I click the drop down arrow to
select "Never Show" or another change, nothing happens. I don't get the
dropdown menu enabling me to select a different display of any of the icons.

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Any fix?

Thanks, Steve L.

Try re-creating an identical shortcut and assigning Ctrl+Shift+f to it;
click Apply, then unassign the shortcut key combination (backspace over it)
and click Apply. See if that frees it up for a different shortcut. May not
work but worth a shot!
