Windows XP SP3 and Word XP.

Every few seconds, my computer checks the USB devices -- I hear the default Windows XP sound for USB. At the same time, if I
am working in Word, the Word application freezes, the outside edges of the application AND the windows toolbar at the bottom
of the screen flash 3-4 times, the Wait Cursor flashes 3-4 times, I hear the USB default sounds 3-4 times. Then I can resume
working.

For a long time, I've been hearing the USB sounds. But the application freezing has just started.

There are times, sometimes hours at a time, where I don't hear the sounds and the Word application works fine.

I could use some help trying to figure out what is going on and how to fix it.
