I have found that its hard to track down, other than going through suspects
in the registry. For example, some HP software is set to check for periodic
updates, but there is no option for it in the software itself, just in the
windows registry. Next time you hear the sound you might check
Taskmanager... I know the feeling, it drives me nuts too when stuff is
going on without my permission.
