OK, Just received a new DELL Prec. 4300 w/WinXP. When I put in a CD, like a
install disk the CD rom drive just spins and will not launch the install
program, tried many. This is also true for USB drives that have
initialization programs built in like the cruze drives.
If I put in a movie dvd it launches fine. I have gone thru tweakui,
autofix, checking policies and making sure the drive wasn't set no to run.
and as usual DELL has no clue.

Apologies in advance if I've selected the wrong subgroup...
After three unsuccessful attempts to install XP SP3 via Windows Update, I am
once again restored back to SP2 and posting to this group. I am receiving the
same error each time, it freezes up on the Windows...

I recently added an internal Western Digital 500 GB SATA2 Drive into a
fairly new computer(less than two months old Phenom 9600) I used the included
software to attempt to format and partition the drive into 4 sections. I
wanted to makle this my primary drive so I could take out the old 30 GB drive
I had laying around that was very slow. The software included was DATA
LIFEGUARD TOOLS and GOOGLE software. The partitions initailly were set up
backwards of how I wanted so I started over again and attempted to do it
opposite of the way I had previously. This time it worked like it should
have in the begining and set it up like I had told it to do, not how I
actually wanted it to be. I had it set it up as a boot partition so my main
drive was copied (taking several hours which surprised me 22GB would take
that long) After seeing that XP was copied to a FAT32 partition I thought it
wouldn't possibly load correctly and was meaning to change it. Before I got
the opportunity my power failed computer shutdown and rebooted but hung on
startup right before login screen. So I put in my Windows XP disk and
attempted a repair install. After running what appeared to be a regular
install I managed to get my main drive back up and running but the drive
letter was changed (from drive C: to drive E:) ; however, most of my
services are now not working as they are set to DRIVE C: . This is
completely frustrating as now I can't even use IE7 and attempting to do so ...

I installed some Microsoft updates recently and had the computer just the way
I wanted. After I shut off so the updates could install and then turned it
back on, once it came up, everything had changed. I could no longer go to the
classic view (even though I selected the option), all my program settings had
disappeared completely, including what files they had used. (Example, my
version of Quicken completely lost its file. Fortunately, I had it backed up.
My settings in Firefox and Internet Explorer had disappeared as well,
including the bookmarks and the page I had set for home.)
I want to be able to go to Classic Vie
--and hope this won't happen every
time I install updates!
Sorry that this is repeated under another listing. Took a little bit to
figure out how these discussion groups worked.

Question about backing up data in XP, I shared all the document folders from
other XP computers, and make sure their VSS and MS VSS Provider services
started, I then mapped these shares on a XP computer. I ran NTBackup.exe on
this XP Pro SP2 machine daily, however when I checked the backup report next
day, some of the files didn't backup because it was in use by other
processes, e.g. outlook pst file.
I thought the VSS can help solve file locking problem, but it didn't work
for me. did I miss out anything? especially, I know if it is a
client-server environment, you can see "previson version" tab, but it's not
available in my situation. Can anyone help?
