How to keep laptop awake when user is logged off?

Author:
Date: Jan 31, 2008 20:26

Hi -

Because we need to remotely access bunches of XP laptops at a time, we need
to find a way to set the power scheme to "Always On" when the user is logged
off. (We can easily use powercfg.exe in a logon script to set it properly
for logged on users.)

I have been told that the power settings for that scenario are under
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT, but when I set the current scheme to "3", which is
"Always On", the machine still goes into suspend mode eventually, therefore I
have to believe that is incorrect.

What I seem to have discovered is that the Power Scheme of the previously
logged on user is what stands. (I haven't tested this after a reboot though.)

Others must run into this problem. Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks.

  Re: Node Type is Broadcast

Hi Patrick,

Node type refers to the manner in which NetBIOS names are resolved to IP
addresses. Changing the Value data of the DWORD Value DhcpNodeType to 0 will
result in Unknown being displayed for Node type, though I think (and I could
be mistaken) that it will default to Broadcast when set to Unknown.

Perhaps a better newsgroup for your networking questions would be:

  Continuous hard drive activity problem.

Author: John Corliss
Date: Jan 29, 2008 05:19

First of all, if this is the wrong group, please point me in the right
direction.

Now on to the problem:

I just put a new ASRock K7VT4A PRO motherboard in a friend's computer
(512 MB, AMD Athlon XP 1600+ CPU, Western Digital WD400BB-00DEA0 model
40 GB HD) and installed XP Home on it. Then I updated the OS to SP2 and
installed all critical updates possible.

At some point, I noticed that the hard drive light flickers about every
second. Not only that, but the activity happens if I boot to Safe Mode.
It doesn't do it while I'm in the BIOS though.

AAARRRGHHH!

Other than the continual flickering of the light, the computer runs
okay, but *MY* computer is running the same OS and the hard drive light
doesn't flicker unless it's doing something.

Here's what I've done to try to stop the hard drive light activity in my
friend's computer:

I've turned off all tasks and file indexing, made no difference.

I don't have MS Office installed on it.

  Locked Profile

After installing a new hard drive, installing WinXP Pro, setting the drive as
a master, I set the old semi-corrupted hard drive as a slave. I have had
success in moving data files from the slave drive to the master. However,
there is a password protected profile on the slave drive that I can not
access. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this without another teardown?

  desktop items customize

I have been getting some new HP workstations with XP Pro on them. Normally I
add the built in Internet Explorer icon to peoples desktop. But when I go to
Display Properties > Customize Desktop > Desktop Items, the Internet Explorer
check box is not even there.

The link below shows how it looks when it is there.

I have gotten around it for now by using Tweak UI for XP to add the icon,
but would like to get it added back into where it normally is so all users
can access this choice.

Any ideas?

Missing Power Off Icon on Welcome Screen

Author: Griff
Date: Jan 28, 2008 05:31

I have 2 PC's at home both running Windows XP Home Edition. Both fully up to
date with Service Packs and updates.

On one of the PC's there is an Icon on the Welcome Screen with an option to
turn off the PC without logging on to a User account but strangeley this is
missing on the other PC.

I understand XP Prof has a local security policy which can be set but have
not foundanywehere within XP home to set this option to on or off.

Any help greatly received

  Printer Drivers

Author: Nige
Date: Jan 28, 2008 05:28

Hi,

I am running Windows XP Professional Edition and use a Canon MP600 printer.
The printer works OK but calling up the 'Properties' page for the printer
takes nearly one minute.

I also have a fax, XPS Document Writer, SagePDFPrinter and Send To OneNote
2007 drivers installed and the 'Properties' dialog box for these appears
within a couple of seconds.

Why would the appearance of the 'Properties' box for the Canon take so long?

Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Nige

Changing Group Membership Changes Profile Settings

Author: Christopher Isherwood
Date: Jan 27, 2008 15:38

When I recently reinstalled Windows on a family member's computer, I created
one profile, customized it, and then copied it to everyone's user accounts.

The original profile was in the 'Administrators' group. The user accounts I
wanted to copy it to were to be set as 'Users/Limited.'

Problem is, when I go to set their accounts to 'Users/Limited,' their
profiles break. Their desktop background disappears, their icons are all
moved, the start menu changes from classic to a messed up version of the new
XP start menu, and some programs (e.g. Outlook) don't work correctly?

And, I can't figure out why. I'm not new to Windows. I have set up plenty of
computers and networks before. I just figured it would be easier this time to
copy the profiles. But, it's not working as intended.

I though about just backing up their 'My Documents,' erasing their profiles,
creating new ones, and recreating the settings and replacing their 'My
Documents.' That's a lot of work, though, and I would prefer to not do it
unless it's necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
