XP SP3 and i still get the Generic Host Process crash problem

Author: Razvan
Date: May 18, 2008 03:50

Hi,

Yeah...well my computer crashes randomly, the Generic
Host Process for Win32 services is the culprit and usually happenes when i
disconnect from the network...wirless, Lan or a USB 3g service provider.
The RPC is down obviously...i know that prety much every windows service
relyes on it, so the computer cann't do anything that showing up that it will
restart in 50 seconds.Restarting RPC manually and using the command "shutdown
-a" brings back some of the functionality, but Copy Paste is not working and
also if i try to view service dependencies i get Win32 access
denied...interesting.Reboting solves the problem untill it arises again.

Last night i left my computer on thru the night(no one touched it) .This
morning i found that my notebook fans were spinning like crazy and that one
of the svchost.exe services was using one of the CPU cores at 100%%.Also this
svchost.exe was using 1.5Gb of RAM...obviously a memory leak.After closing
this service there was another(forgot it's name) that was at 100%% usage. All i
know is that it was under the NETWORK credentials.

I disabled automatic updates to see what happens over time, but if any of you
have any idea of what is going on, your input is much appreciated.

  dial up icon vanished?

Author: superc
Date: May 17, 2008 08:54

Windows XP. Dial up connection only. Windows Defender and AVG. Everything
was fine until last MS Tuesday when SP3 came out. Took half a day to get it
with the dialup but I allowed 'auto updates' to do its thing. Seemed to
install okay, but after the reboot my 'network connections' are all messed
up.

I no longer get any indication of progress while dialing out or when the
connection occurs.
No connected icon shows in the task bar (which of course means I can't
readily tell if I am online, nor can I check duration or firewall state).
going to 'connect to' shows the connection icon as Disconnected, even when
it isn't.
going to properties for the icon in the 'network connections' or 'connect
to' windows shows the check mark to display the status in the taskbar is
indeed already checked.
Any attempt to change the checkmark while on line generates the appropriate
'the connection is active..' message, but at the same time the icon says the
system is disconnected.

  USer profiles

Author: Erik
Date: May 16, 2008 00:03

Lately, it happened, that on several of our workstations, there appeared a
temp profile after a user logged on. At first of course we thought all the
personal settings, favourites etc. we gone. After a quick examination it came
forward that the systems made a temp profile. The original profile was still
intact. After a safe boot, deletion of the temp-profile and a normal restart
and login, everything turned normal again.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Unable to Enable Automated Update in Services

Author: GNM
Date: May 15, 2008 16:31

After updaing my PC's with the SP3 I am consistently getting the red shield
telling me to turn on my automated updates. This is true as well with
Onecare making the same statement. The SP3 also has deleted my restore
history making it now impossible to restore to a certain point any longer. I
now have to setup a new restore point which really pisses me off. Even after
the many and frustrating attempts to follow Microsoft Self-Help Options and
Solutions I find that there is nothing short o a fix apparently. I have gone
into the SERVICES and manually made the selections accordingly and all I get
is:

(1058 Automated Update Disabled and/or has no enabled devices) or
(url://c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm).

Regards to the first: No duh, you cannot enable it, How much more redundant
can MS get?

Regards to the second: Well, so redundant that they can't even allow a
simplified means to correct something they allowed their programmers to
totally screw up.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, have you been forunate enough to gain
access to a fix? This issue has occured on both of my WINDOWS XP PC's and my
one and only VISTA Professional PC.

Hi,

Has anyone seen the XP sign-on page start displaying that of previous
Windows? Instead of having two icons (2-user accounts) on the first screen
after booting, I now have a Windows dialog window where I have to type
(rather than clicking my name) my account name; I then click OK. It looks
like Windows for Workgroups and the older Microsoft Windows.

Any idea of what has happened?

  Some Search Bugs

Author: Bob
Date: May 13, 2008 21:25

Hi Guys

I have a problem that still exists after I received the SP3 for XP.
I still cannot search for every file and folder. there are few issues that I
could not fix by myself yet

1- go to your windows host drive (the drive that you installed windows)
search for explorer.exe. After a few seconds or minutes or may be days it
will say "Search is complete. There is no result to display". Now goto
windows folder and type e, x, p and you are on it, the explorer.exe file. Now
go back to root folder and try searching "msmsgs.exe" same answer now go to
"\Program Files\Messenger" folder, thats it second file in list!

I want to force search to look in every folder including system folders like
windows and "program files"

I even tried to delete desktop.ini files from these folders but still no
success.

searchin every folder is usefull when you are searching for a virus running
in memory and you can see it in taskmanager and when you search for it you
cannot find it except if you search each folder sepratly that it isvery time
consuming process.

  Change boot drive

Author:
Date: May 13, 2008 02:08

I have had a new 500GB drive installed on my XP Home computer and it is my
intention that my 250GB Drive C be relegated to just a repository for
additional data. So I have cloned the old HDD to the new HDD using Acronis.
How do I change the drive letter on the new drive to C and how do I change
the system so that I boot up on the new HDD?
