Hi Neil,
Sadly that functionality doesn't exist natively in Windows Media Player
however WMP does offer a "plug-in" model and there does appear to be a plugin
that may offer this functionality.
www.wmplugins.com is a Microsoft hosted website where third party software
developers can create plugins and additions to Windows Media Player and make
them available to the public. There's one there that claims to offer what
you seek:

From the writeup: "New version includes microphone input and screen saver
modes, as well as enhanced performance and more variations. "
I cannot vouch for this plug-in as I've never used it, but it's got a four
stars out of five rating so someone likes it. Hope this helps!
