WMP 11 would play some .wmv files with sound but not others, video always
worked. I uninstalled WMP11, going back to 10. Same issue. I downloaded WMP
from the Microsoft site and reinstalled. Still no fix.
I checked and installed wmp11 codecs, stopped codecs using device manager,
compared the sound codecs in device manager, removed 1 for Messenger that
didn't match the other PC.... none of these things worked. Whatever was
turned off I turned back on again but didn't find the Messenger codec to
replace.
I started uninstalling some old applications and helper apps to see if that
would help. I finally removed Samsung PC Studio phone software and the .wmv
files that wouldn't play before now started playing. I fixed the problem.
Then my son said that he couldn't click on any sound files without getting
the codec error: You've encountered error message C00D11B1 while using
Windows Media Player. He didn't know when this started so the two problems
may not be related.
If I download the file (.wav, .mid, etc) to my desktop and double click then
the music plays. It just won't start from Internet Explorer, so that's where
the problem must be.
