Homebuilt MCE 2004 remote needed

I recently installed MCE 2004 on a computer I would like to use in my
living room. The MCE setup is trying to detect a remote so I need to
get one.

Does anyone know if the MS wireless KB+mouse combo will work with MCE
2004 or is it 2005+ only? I don't need it to control my TV, just the
computer.

Will the ATI Remote Wonder provide the functionality it is looking
for?

I did read on ATI's site that it is compatible with XP so I know that
it will "work" with the PC. I know very little about MCE though so I
though I'd ask the community for info about MCE specifically.

(Note: I do not have cable or satellite. 100%% of the TV my family
watches is on DVD or streaming video from Netflix. I don't care about
controlling a TV tuner but I do care about listening to MP3s and
watching DVD's.)

BTW...the reason I am using MCE 2004 is that latest I have in my MSDN
subscription which lapsed before 2005 was released. When I renew my
subscription later this year I'll upgrade to 2005.

TIA

You will need to get a genuine MCE Remote kit because the IR Receiver for
the KB is not included. The KB is sold assuming you already have the remote
and therefore have the receiver. The remote kit can either be the MS one or
an OEM, but it needs to be the actually MCE remote/receiver compatible
combo. Newegg sells them for around $30, maybe less on fleabay.

However, if you only want to control the PC, you might do better buy some
other wireless KB/Mouse kit. The MCE one is IR (to integrate it with the
remote), most other ones are RF, so they have better range. Also, the mouse
"stick" on the keyboard is marginal, at best; it is a little tricky to use
for lots of mousing around on the screen. Otherwise the KB is very slick in
it's interface to MCE.

MS says the KB is only for MCE 2005 or later, but I don't know if anyone has
been successful on an earlier version.

This: http://www.pcalchemy.com/product_info.php/pName/microsoft-mce-keyboardremote-control...
appears to have a remote, KB and IR transmitter/receiver in one
package

Maybe it would help if I add my expectations. I want to load the PC
up with MP3s by ripping my 300 disc collection so I can use it instead
of swapping CDs in and out of my CD changer for listening to music and
control the play of DVDs with a remote, not a mouse and keyboard. When
I do want to watch a movie on Netflix I'll minimize the Media Center
app, open IE and play the movie in the same manner I currently do on
my laptop. What I am really trying to figure out is whether MCE 2004
will recognize the KB and remote as being MCE usable devices so that I
can navigate MCE with them. I've used wireless kb/mice with computers
before, it's the remote part that I've never used.

I would be leery of the MCE keyboard. The Remote will probably work fine.
I have seen people that had problems with the MCE Keyboard on Windows XP
Pro.

The Keyboard is for use in the MCE interface, it is not a general USB
keyboard.

The link I gave in the previous message for the Microsoft Media Center
Remote is the correct remote control for MCE, it includes the necessary IR
Receiver and Emitters for remote control of Set Top boxes for cable and
Satellite.

The link I gave is for $38 plus change, the link you are looking at is
almost $70
