Last week my computer failed so I bought a new hard drive and a new power
unit. I found that it was the power unit that had failed so have kept the
old hard drive as it held all my programmes.
Since then I have found that the speakers (they are good quality) give off a
screech or pitch noise at high volumes. I have tried the sound through a
hi-fi unit and still get the screech at high volume.
The power unit is a Hiper, again good quality and has been checked so that
is not the problem.
The computer does not have a separate sound card, it is integrated in the
motherboard, I do not think that I can do anything with the existing sound
system.
Is it possible that the sound element is faulty and if so would fitting a
completly new sound card cure the problem?
My speakers are bew 2.1 but...

Thanks Chris, I shall buy a new sound card on Wednesday from the supplier of
my computer. They should know the correct one to sell me.

You don't need anything in particular, just look for one that has good
reviews. You should be able to get a Sound Blaster Audigy Value or SE card
for a reasonable price, around $30 I believe. Probably the best sound
quality you can get for < $100.

Chris, I bought a new sound card and after disabling the sound card in the
motherboard the new one is working fine. No screeching and all works at
present except for the mike; it would have been set up for the sound card in
the motherboard so I still have that to sort out but it is no big deal if it
does not work.
Thanks again.

To get the Microphone to work you need to set the input mux to Microphone.
Go to the Sound & Audio Devices control panel, under Sound recording make
sure the correct card name is showing as the default and click the Volume
button (the second one in the recording section). On the screen that
appears make sure that Microphone is selected.
