Windows XP Client - Secondary DNS Server

Author: Michael Cartier

After a long time in the biz, I've been told my understanding of the Windows
DNS client is wrong. Hoping someone can clarify for me....

Does Windows XP ever query its secondary DNS server, even if the primary is
online and responding? Here is our scenario....

Our network team configured a VPN branch tunnel and configured the desktops
on the (outside) end of the tunnel to have it DNS servers as the following:

Primary: ISP (Public)
Secondary: Internal AD DNS Server

We're having issues and when I told them that the AD DNS server should be
primary, the network team said that the secondary is queried as well as the
primary. I think they're wrong....am I wrong? To my knowledge the secondary
is not engaged unless the primary is unavailable (down).

reverse lookup quandry - legancy system still in DNS

Author: P. Cully

Hi

I have a machine that has been physically removed from my network. It does
not show in DHCP as having any IP lease or reservation. It doesn't show in
my DNS forward zone. It does show in my DNS reverse lookup zone and no
matter how many times I delete it, it returns.

Obviously, it has left a foot print someplace that I'm not able to discover.
Can someone assist me with this?
thanks,
pcully

why doesn't this DNS server on windows 2008 work?

This is a long post but has all the information I did. I posted it on windows
2000 DNS. If it is a different news group please point me to the windows 2008
dns group.
I have been trying hard to set up my own DNS on windows 2008 server. I only
have one server and is for web hosting my personal websites. I intend to host
my own websites and their sub domains. The server is having DC + DNS and IIS
(including websites) - all-in-one. But it doesn't seem to work. Ofcourse I
want to have active directory as well so that I could extend for couple of
more users and clients later. Here is the background.

- Setting up the DNS for the first time ( No experience) on windows 2008
server
- Installed windows 2008
- Changed the computer name to NS1 (Pointed to this ns1.mywebsite.com from
godaddy name server and gave this server ip in godaddy @ ip)
- Installed first DC and AD and DNS with the following info
FQDN : mywebsite.com
( didn't put NS1 as that was the computer name. Should I use
NS1.mywebsite.com for FQDN instead?)
netbois : mywebsite

How to Delete Some Records in Reverse Lookup Zones

Author: zerhyr
Date: Aug 31, 2008 21:50

I have some ptr in Reverse Lookup Zones that I'm not able to delete. When I
check for the A record, the entry does not exist. As a result, I'm not able
to reuse that IP as when I run "ping -a" it is resolving to the old entry.
How can I delete the old ptr in Reverse Lookup Zones? Thank you in advance

  VirtualBox 1.6.4 | Utilities

VirtualBox 1.6.4 | Utilities

InnoTek VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products
for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and
embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization
solution that is also Open Source Software.

Some of the features of VirtualBox are:

* Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-
defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design.
This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for
example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine
GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly
remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit:
even though it is Open Source Software, you don´t have to hack the
source to write a new interface for VirtualBox.

* Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of
virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the
local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be
ported to other computers.
