[Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?

Author: Oriane

Hi there,

a very simple question: I can't find the SSMS component during the Server
2008 RC0 installation process. Is it on a separate download ?

Thanks a lot

Hi Oriane,

SSMS is a Management Tool of SQL Server and yes, it comes with SQL Server
2008 RC0.

However it'll not be installed unless you select it to be installed during
the SQL Server 2008 Setup. You can select it in the Feature Selection pane.
It's listed under the Shared Features list as Management Tools - Basic

Hi Ekrem,

Unfortunately the only options available on the feature selection screen are:

Instance Features
Database Engine Services
SQL Server Replication

Shared Features
SQL Client Connectivity SDK

Redistributable Features

with only Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication and SQL Client
Connectivity SDK selectable.

The SSMS is not mentioned in the descriptions of any of the selectable
options. Selecting all of them the only manager that gets installed is the
configuration manager.

Is there another way to get the SSMS isntalled?

Then I believe your Setup belongs to a SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express Edition.

It will probably not include SSMSE. I'm downloading it now to have a look.
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition does not ship with SSMSE either. (Express
Edition with Advanced Services does)

I don't think there is an SSMSE for SQL Server 2008 released now. Probably
not.

I've downloaded and checked SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express Edition and in SQL
Server 2008 Setup, it seems there is a Management Tools - Basic (which
includes SSMSE) in the Feature Selection list.

Can you tell me how and where have you had this Setup that you try to run
now?

You can have it from the following link:

Is it possible you chose an upgrade, and/or already have SQL Server 2005
client tools installed?

Yes, please first check if your SQL Server 2008 is an Express Edition as
Ekrem mentioned.

Then if you have SQL Server 2005 Management Studio installed, SQL Server
2008 Management Studio will not be installed. In this case, I recommend
that you first uninstall SQL Server 2005 client tools from add/remove
programs. Click SQL Server 2005, click Remove, only check Workstation
components and follow the wizard to remove it.

I have SSMS 2205 and SSMS 2208 CTP6 (november release). Do I have also to
remove it ?

If you have CTP6 installed, uninstall it first. The release notes say that
upgrading from CTP6 is supported, but there are many who have had problems
doing that. If you have databases you want to keep, you can attach them to
RC0 once you have it installed.

There is absolutely no reason to uninstall anything of SQL 2005.

I don't have CTP6 server but only CT6 SSMS. And now on the same machine, one
RC0 server.

So you don't agree with Charles ?
But in that case, there is no option to install SSMS RC0...
