Folks,

Back on May 5, 2008 I posted a question under subject heading “The Wrong
Volume is in the Drive …” regarding media installation errors. Well, I
thought I had a workaround, and there were 1 or 2 times during my testing
when it did work, but I have just run into an issue where it did not. And
while this workaround may work in some instances, it is clumsy, awkward, and
just not acceptable.

So I would like to post this once again as I’m sure there must be a solution
to this. I can’t imagine everyone is accepting this clumsy installation.

Upgrade Path: SQL 2K Enterprise SP3 - > SQL 2K5 Enterprise SP2
OS: Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 (fresh install)

First off, upon placing the media into the CD drive, I’m presented with an
error dialogue box “A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you want to Debug?
Line:45 Error: object doesn’t support this property or method” I select No.

I then choose to install server components, etc and all is well, the first
disk completes - no issues. I then insert the second CD to complete the
installation. It is during the final component (Workstation Components, Book
Online, etc) when I am presented with an error dialogue box indicating “The
wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume SQLSRVS into drive D:.”
At this point I have 3 options: Cancel, Try Again, Continue. Selecting any
one of these options does not do anything; the error dialogue box simply does
not go away. Not even with Task Manager can I kill this. I have to cancel the
installation, go into Task Manager and kill both the Upgrade and the Error.
Then as I understand the workaround to be, I have to run SQLRun_Tools.msi.
from the second CD. Well, this time, on this particular OS/SQL pair it did
not work for me.

Surely, this must be resolved – no?

At this point my upgrade plans are on hold until I can install without these
media errors.
