SQL2008 Fails VSShellInstalledRule

Unable to to install SQL2008 due to failure of VSShellInstalledRule check.

A previous release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is installed on this
computer. Upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 to the SP1 before installing
SQL Server 2008.

I have installed VS2008 SP1 Beta - Still no success.
Is anyone else encountering this problem?

This failure also occurs even if I have not selected BIDS within setup
options.

Visual Studio 2008 SP1 may be required for SQL Server 2008 installations
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956139

If you have to install SQL 2008, deselect all the Visual Studio based
components. (BIDS, etc.). This only applies if you ahve Visual Studio 2008
already installed on the system.

I have the same issue. I have Visual Studio 2008 and now I cannot install
SQL Server 2008. It seems to be looking for Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

Has Visual Studio 2008 SP1 been released? I was only able to get the beta
and even that does not work for me.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks
Vikram

To avoid this behavior, use one of the following methods:
Alternatively, you can find more information at:
http://sqlcommunity.com/Discussions/tabid/54/forumid/4/threadid/157/scope/posts/language/en...

• Before you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, install the release
version of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 for all Visual Studio components.
• Before you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, uninstall all the Visual
Studio 2008 components that are earlier than Service Pack 1.
• When you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, do not select any of the
SQL Server 2008 features that require Visual Studio 2008 to be installed. For
example, do not select the Analysis Services, Integration Services, or
Business Intelligence Development Studio features.

Thanks Saleem!
Any idea where we can get the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 from? Is it out yet?
Does anyone know the possible RTM date for Visual Studio 2008 SP1?

Thanks in advance.

Same situation/question here...when is "Visual Studio 2008 SP1" going to RTM?

Why would RTM software depend on Beta software? Nice one MS!!!!

It is the other way around. SQL Server 2008 RTM depends on fx 3.5 sp1 is *not* beta.

Not beta, but not yet released. Even worse, it depends upon
unavailable software.

I was only commenting on the incorrect info that SQL Server 2008 depend on beta sw, which it
doesn't.

Fx 3.5 sp1, release version, *is* a part of SQL Server 2008 installation. What causes problem is if
you have VS 2008 installed - where we are in a situation which I agree isn't ideal. Many of us
don't have VS install (I've already done some 10 engine installs for such installations) - and those
installations are not affected by this.

Anyhow, I won't continue splitting hairs here regarding terminology. For the benefit of other
readers who might happen to stumble on this thread, here's a blog post with some URLs that describes
this in more details:
