Question about SQL Server 2000 registration

Author: B. Chernick
Date: Sep 17, 2008 10:07

Just found this out by trial and error. I was trying to register a 2nd
instance of SQL Server 2000 on one of our servers. I was able to register,
no problem, but I noticed that this server instance (call it
name>\testname) was not visible on the available servers list of the
registration wizard.

Is this just a bug in the 2000 Enterprise Manager or is there something you
have to do during instance setup to make 2nd instances visible on the list?

(When I deleted all registrations for that server, the
appeared on the list but still no \testname. I should also
mention that I was not the one who set up the 2nd instance and 2nd instances
are not a common practice in our shop.)

The list has never been reliable due to several technical reasons and implementations. Type the
name.

As Tibor has already mentioned, it happens sometimes. However, it mostly
appears (at least for me) on the list after you enter an instance's name
manually and successfully logined once.
