My installation fails because the installer thinks the shared component
directory is compressed. It is trying to use the same directory that SQL2005
is in and it is not compressed. The drive is mostly compressed. I un
compresses the entire parent directory and it still failed.

Is this a bug?

Maybe you have to disable compression on the entire drive? You could also
remove the 2005 shared components, install the 2008 tools, and put them on
another drive with more space, that doesn't need to be compressed. (Sorry,
but at the price of storage these days, there is little excuse to need
compression on a developer machine.)
