Installed VS 2005 want to Manage SQL 2005 Server

So I have a Development machine that I have installed Visual Studio 2005 on
and SP1, The Dev Environment works great and I have been Terminal Serving to
my SQL 2005 Server to do Administration. It would be real handy to install
the SQL 2005 Management tools on the VS2005 Development machine.

When I go to do the Managment tools install, it complains that I have an
Edition Version Conflict.

What are my options?

Thanks,
Scott<-

Dear Scott,

Thank you for posting here.

From the problem description of the post you submitted, my understanding
is: You would like to install the SQL Server Management tools on the Visual
Studio 2005 Development machine but received an "Edition Version Conflict"
message. If I have misunderstood about your concern, feel free to let me
know.

Based on my experience and test, I am able to install the SQL Server
Management tools on the machine with VS 2005 SP1 installed. My test process
was as following:

1. Install the Visual Studio 2005 on my test server
2. Install the Service Pack 1 for Visual Studio 2005
3. Run the following setup file to install Client tools for SQL Server 2005
only:

\Tools\setup.exe

4. Select all the client tools (include Management tools) for SQL Server
2005 in the installation wizard
5. The installation can be completed successfully.

Hmmm.. My SQL Server CD does not have a 'Tools' Folder off the root or
anywhere.
Off the Root, I have:
1033
redist
|- 2.0
Upgrade Advisor
Windows Installer
setup
|- Help
|- 1033
Images

So I looked for the next best thing.

In the Setup folder there was a file called: SqlRun_Tools.msi

I ran it and it looked and smelled jsut like the Client tools installer.
Selected all the tools, management etc..

Okay so I found the Tools Folder on a Physical Disk. I Guess I didn't copy
it to the Install Source on the Server.

I run the Setup and it says there is an Edition Conflict and to run setup
from a command prompt and use the switch:
- Edition Change Check (Warning)
Messages
Edition Change Check

To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different
edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the
command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.

There is a 'Next' Button so I continued. I then got the Following:
The Following Components that you chose to install are already installed
onthe machine. To vire a report of available options and alternatives click
Details.

Then there is a greyed out like that reads:
workstation components, books online and development tools 9.2.3042.00

Clicking Details gives me:

Dear Scott,

Thank you for posting back.

According to the information in your last post, it appears that the issue
is that the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition has already
been installed on the machine and causes the version conflict issue.

We can try to manually remove the Client Tools for Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express Edition and then install the SQL Server Management tools
again. To do so, please refer to the following steps:

So I did the SKUUPGRADE=1 as a parameter to Setup.exe inthe tools folder.

It went through with the install of the Tools.

Though the thing that concerns me is that the version went from 9.2.3042.00
to 9.0.3042.00.
I did reapply SP1 for Visual Studio and SP2 for SQL (in that order) and it
still shows 9.0.3042.00 for the SQL Management Studio.

My Concern is that I might be missing something?

Thanks,

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your update.

I am glad to hear that we are able to go through with the install of the
Tools via the "SKUUPGRADE=1" switch box. Your efforts are appreciated.

Regarding your question, I would like to explain that the version
"9.2.3042.00" just applies to the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
client tool and this version is the latest one. The Service Pack 2 for SQL
Server is used to fix some known issues and add some feature of the SQL
engine and it will not do any changes on the management client tool. So, if
you find the version of Management Studio keeps being 9.2.3042.00 even
after re-applying SQL Server SP2, this is a normal behavior.

For your reference, we can run the command "select SERVERPROPERTY
('productlevel')" to manually check the version of SQL DB engine to confirm
if the SQL Server 2005 SP2 has been installed successfully,

In addition, I also notice that the SP version is 050727-7600. It indicates
that the current version of Visual Studio is Service Pack 1.

From all the information you uploaded, it seems that all the components are
up to date and everything works fine now.

Try running the MSI Cleanup utility. Even as the components are not installed, Windows Installer finds entries in registry, and therefore will not allow to install them. You can download it at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301
