I wish to install SQL SERVER 2008 and
VS 2008 Team System.
I presently have installed
VS 2008 Pro
and SQL 2005
There is also a folder called SQL Server Compact edition which I think is
from a different VS 2008 Pro.
Looking at the Add/Remove Programs listing there also appears an entry for
VS 2005 professional edition-enu which I don't understand - thought I
removed that before installing vs2008 pro
I thought I'd uninstall everything names SQL.. and VS...
And after that delete any folders so named (if any are left)
Then install the new software. See anything wrong with that?
I'd like to install the new additions on a disk different from the system. Is
that possible?
**This is the most important question here:
What sequence should the new software be installed? SQL before VS or the
other way?
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice

Install VS 2008 and its SP1 and then install a SQL Server 2008 instance.
I haven't tried installing VS to another drive but for SQL Server, it's
partially possible to install it to another drive. Because installation of
some components are fixed and some are configurable. To see a detailed list
of these components, follow this link:

I had installed and removed SQL server 2005.
I still see in Add or Remove Programs
Microsoft SQL Server Compact... (3 items).
And a
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
Should I remove them before installing SQL 2008.
Thanks

You should uninstall both prior to installation.
Don't forget about "SQL Server Books Online" from the prior version if you
had installed that.
Also, there should be MSXML 4.0 ... which are remnants of SQL Server 2005
which you can uninstall too. SQL Server 2008 uses MSXML 6.0 parser...
In response to your original question, you should definitely install SQL
Server before Visual Studio, as VS by default installs MSDE which can
interfere with your SQL Server installation if your want SQL Server as the
Default instance.

Installing VS 2008 and its SP1 and then SQL Server 2008 works fairly well in
my environments. Of course installing SQL Server 2008 and then VS 2008 would
also work. The point here is that, VS 2008' s SP1 should be installed prior
to SQL Server 2008 installation.
Also, VS 2008 does not install MSDE, it installs SQL Server 2005 Express
Edition in case you choose it to be installed during VS Setup.

These two products are not dependant on each other. They just work together
very well and integrated.
However, if you want to install the VS 2008 first, then you should apply SP1
prior to installing SQL Server 2008. I encourage you to see this KB:
