SQL Server 2005 Developer and Enterprise Editions are equal in terms of
features. It differs when it comes to the Licensing procedures. So you can't
install a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on Windows XP or Vista but you
can install a Developer Edition on XP or Vista.
Can your problem be having already a Default Instance of SQL Server
installed on the system and you are trying to install another Default
Instance which is not allowed by design?

I am running the setup from the microsoft sql 2005 dev edition iso
image file, so am sure i am running the correct setup file. My Virtual
PC has captured the iso file as one of it's drive which is correct as
i have installed quiet a lot of other softwares by this way. I just
read somewhere on google that you can install sql 2k5 standard edition
on xp but on dev edition which is equivalent to enterprise edition,
but don't know if this is actually correct.
