Hello,

You do not need additional licenses for multiple instances. You may want to
take a look at the following quote by Microsoft:

Q. How does licensing work with the multi-instance feature in SQL Server
2005?
A. You can run multiple instances of SQL Server 2005 on a single computer.
Multiple instances are used by organizations that have several applications
running on a server but want them to run in isolation so that any problem in
one instance will not affect the other instances. In SQL Server 2005, you
can now run multiple instances with the Workgroup, Standard, and Enterprise
editions when they are licensed server/CAL or on a per-processor basis.

Is that a change from the SQL 2000 licensing model? I think it is...

I believe that for SQL2K, you need one license per instance for Standard Edition (non-Enterprise)
and in Per User mode.

However, for Enterprise (any mode) you can install several instance with same license.

Also for Standard (and probably Workgroup) in Per Processor mode, you can install several instance
with same license.

This is from memory, the SQL2K licensing FAQ page. I don't know if the SQL2K licensing FAQ page is
online anymore, though...

That quote made me think we do not need additional licenses for multiple
instances of SQL Server on the same machine.

However, take a look at this one:
"A Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition license entitles you to
install multiple instances of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services on a single
computer. Other editions of SQL Server 2005 require a separate license for
each instance. For complete details, refer to the licensing agreement
packaged with your product."
