  Malware sets IE to thearticlebay.com

Author:
Date: Jul 20, 2008 16:11

While my wife was in Mexico her laptop picked up malware that
automatically launches IE pointed to www.thearticlebay.com - even
though the default browser is firefox.

We know the bugger checks for internet access before launching. We
know this because the laptop has an external switch to turn off
wireless, and the launch never happens with wireless is off, but
happens in less than one minute from turning wireless on.

We know the bugger checks for internet access using the default
browser. We know this because when ZoneAlarm is installed and denies
internet access to firefox, the IE launch never happens. When
ZoneAlarm is told to permit firefox, the launch happens in less than
a minute.

Googling thearticlebay, com virus turns up only Spanish language hits -
translating them shows a lot of generic help about malware programs,
but nothing specific to the problem and no indication anybody solved
it.

TrendMicro, Norton (google packs), AdAware, and SpyBot all failed to
find it.

Any ideas on how proceed?

Slacker Virus in PowerPoint files (embedded Excel objects)

Author: Karen Cooper
Date: Jul 20, 2008 10:39

Hello everyone,

One of my team's PowerPoint files apparently got infected with a virus which
Mcafee describes as the "slacker virus" but is unable to desinfected it for
some reason - I get an error saying file cannot be cleaned whenever I try to
do so.

The Mcafee scan result shows me a list of about 25 infected OLE obejcts,
which are Excel embedded objects for the vast majority - there are tens of
those inserted into that one file - but there is no way to tell which
infected object corresponds to the actual object in the presentation as far
as I can tell. Otherwise I would simply delete the infected objects from
the PPT file and I reinsert new ones that had already been pre scanned for
viruses (virii?).

DNS flaw discoverer says more permanent fixes will be needed
Current patch options merely stopgaps; worst attacks likely on the way

  urqOGVPJ.dll

Author: Knowledge Worker
Date: Jul 18, 2008 12:38

OK!!!

I was a bad boy and was downloading bad things from the internet

Windows Defender found a Trojan: Win32/Vundo.gen
Used Window Defender to remove it
It told me that it needs to send the file to Microsoft
I allowed it. Windows Defender crashed.

Rebooted
Used Windows Defender and Norton Internet Security 2008 to scan the entire
computer
Same Virus was found by Windows Defender.
It was able to remove it this time

NIS 2008 found no virus

Now every time I login to my Vista Home Premium 2008, I encounter the
following error message

Title: RunDLL
Message: Error loading C:\Windows\System32\urqOGVPJ.dll

The specified module could not be found

OK button
Click on it, it goes away

Needing an enterprise product installable on Windows XP or 2003 that can scan Apple Mac's

Author: Chris McKean

We use Officescan for our enterprise anti-virus system, and I thought they
might integrate Mac based scanning(due to their partnership with Intego), to
avoid having to buy a Mac to install an antivirus system on. I have a ticket
open with Trend on this question for their products, but I'm willing to go
with any other Windows based product.
I want to avoid convincing my boss to buy a Mac for me to test antivirus
products on, and then discover later there was no need, if a good one exists
where the management console can run on Windows. Because then I'd have $1000
worth of Mac that wasn't needed.

Annoying virus - can't tell what process it's associated with...

Author: lilone

I caught a virus on my computer yesterday.

It brings me pop-ups every now and then and it has been really annoying. I
scanned my computer using Spybot and Symantec Antivirus (with the most
updated definitions) and deleted whatever they found. Symantec found a virus
called "Downloader" which I think I have seen before. It is saves as an htm
file. Symantec automatic scan in the back pops up every now and then saying
it found that virus and it cleans it sometimes but sometimes it can only
clean it partially.

I have tried to match up what I see on Windows Task Manager and Sysinternals
Process Explorer but I don't see anything strange or maybe I just can't
recognize it.

Another problem that arose after the virus infected my computer was that
Automatic Updates got turned off and I couldn't turn it back on through
Security Center, Control Panel or services.msc. It automatically turns off
itself once I try to enable it. So I tried going on Internet Explorer to go
on Microsoft.com to find an answer. However whenever I try, 40 pop-ups come
at once and freezes my computer (which is currently still freezing.)
