After furious head scratching, Mike asked:

Outlook only works with Windows Instant Messenger and the new Live
Messenger.

That field is just for information on what IM service of that person. I put
in whatever they use, which is often a Yahoo or Skype username, if not
Windows Live Messenger. The Windows Live Messenger status integration only
seems to work on the main email address field, anyway, which is a pity.

It's intention is for Messenger (and Office Communicator) integration with
outlook, but you can certainly enter addresses used with other services if
desired. On 2007 with the newest LM client it works as expected - reading
the IM address field and showing their presence status based on that
address.

I know what the letters IM refer to (Instant Messenger). My question(s):
"What is the IM address, i.e. is it the person's email address or what? If
it's not the person's email address, then how do I get it? Would I need to
contact each individual and ask for it? Can I assume the person would know
what it is?"

Also can you tell me the purpose of the "Notify me of replies" checkbox
below. I check it but do not get notified when a reply occurs.

Thanks.

you need to know the persons IM address and put it in the field in their
contact. if they are in your windows messenger/live messenger list and use
the same address for email you won't need to fill in the field.
