Outlook automatic phone dialing

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,
My automatic phone dialing used to work fine. I have windows XP with Outlook
2003 (I think). I can happily send faxes from Word so the modem works ok. but
when I try to dial I get "Unable to complete an operation requested by the
automatic phone dialer. Please make sure your modem, phone and phone line are
working properly".
The situation may have commenced soon after, but not at the exact time that
I transferred to the NTL (Now Virgin) UK cable phone service with a broadband
connection - but as I say the fax still dials.
The computer has alwayse used an Agere Systems PCI soft modem internally and
this is still set up in the line propeties box under dialing options. I've
tried changing various things and have certainly not improved anything.
I would be most grateful...

What are you trying to dial?
Virgin cable is an allways on service, and as such your Outllook accounts
would normally be set to connect via Lan
I assume NTL supplied you with their standard cable modem connected by usb,
or is yours via set top box?

Dear DL,
Thank you for replying to my question.

I am trying to dial normal telephone numbers stored in Contacts using it
just like the memory in a phone. It was a great system when it worked – all
the details are there in Outlook. I clicked on a name and then the telephone
icon and the number was dialled at the same time I picked up my phone and
took it from there.

There is an NTL cable box outside my home and inside there is a telephone
socket and a second box (which I imagine is the broadband connection) a cable
(coaxial and thicker than the phone wires) runs from the latter to an NTL
supplied cable modem (I imagine for the broadband connection) this is
connected to the computer through an Ethernet connection. A second wire runs
from a telephone socket to the computer (presumably to my internal Agere
systems soft modem).

My Outlook e-mail accounts appear to be set to connect via a LAN but the
phone dialer and fax appear to be set to use the internal modem – which seems
to make sense. The fax dials but sadly the dialer doesn’t.

Yours sincerely,
Barry Hursell

Oh, I see what you are at now;
Have you checked, in the new call window, under Dialing Options & Dialing
Properties?

Dear DL,
Thanks for your message. Yes – I have fiddled with the details there to
no avail. Of course it may be that I did something here that messed things up
in the first place but I don’t think this is likely.
If it might assist you in helping me the details there are:-
In Dialing properties/Dialing rules Area Code 01603 (I’m in Norwich)
If I go in to Edit. Location name is My Location
Country/Region is United Kingdom and Area Code is 01603
There are no dialing rules set
Call waiting box is unchecked (I can’t get call waiting on NTL/Virgin in
Norwich)
Tone is selected as opposed to Pulse.
There are no Area Code rules set in that tab.
None is selected as a calling card.

Well thats all the same as mine other than Area code & modem.
Whilst I dont use OL contacts to dial I did test it with my USR modem & its
fine.(I also fax ok, & have NTL cable)
I dont think the problem is related to OL.
When you fax are you using windows fax or your modem fax driver/software?
I would suspect that you probably have some modem software installed, that
being the case have you tried dialing with that, as a test?

Dear DL,
Thank you for your continued help.

I’ve looked at Printers and Faxes in Control Panel and in the Devices tab I
have the Agere Systems PCI softmodem with a Yes for receive only (I don’t
usually want to receive faxes) there are two Bluetooth modems, as before
with, No selected.
The Agere fax is also selected under the Tracking tab.

If I try to send a fax (I could send one but have no tame recipient – but I
did send one a few days ago) with File/Print and then select Fax as my
printer under Type it has Microsoft Shared Fax Driver and under Where it has
SHRFAX.

So it seems to use the same modem but I don’t know what SHRFAX is.

Under Fax Console in Start/Programs/Accessories/Communication/Fax/Fax
Console I went through the configuration wizard. The Agere Systems Softmodem
was selected the rest was run of the mill stuff.

I regret that I don’t know how to find out if I am using some fax driver
software in either application beyond what I have explained and I’m not sure
how to dial with it if I could locate it but I’d be pleased of further
explanation on how to approach the matter.

Dear DL,
Sorry that should, of course, have been Yes for Send only with
No for receive and both choices for the Bluetooth modems have No selected.

Do you think it is worth reinstalling or "repairing" Outlook and if so could
you give me a hint on how to do it. I don't want to risk messing it up,
losing stuff or needing to spend a long time fiddling to get it back to
normal.

Best wishes,
Barry Hursell

You can run a Detect/Repair of OL, its unlikely to do any harm, but then I
dont think it will cure anything.

Is your PC an HP?
If its an OEM PC that came with the modem installed there would usually be
some modem communications software installed, under Programs or Accessories.
You can fax & dial within that software
The Shrfax is the MS Shared fax driver & it would appear as a 'printer'
option in eg Word
Fax Consul is the inbuilt winxp fax device
Usually if the Modem drivers are installed from their manufacturers cd there
would be a modem specific fax driver shown in the 'printers'

I think you should reinstall your modem drivers the manufacturers site,
which will likely be your PC maker if an HP.
I couldnt find a direct link for the Agere modem manfacturers, only to
generic driver sites.
The latest driver I found would appear to be dated 2004

Dear Dl,
Thanks for continuing ideas.

No my PC is not an HP it is a Tevion bought from the Aldi supermarket a few
years ago – nothing spectacular but I’m not into gaming and it does all I
need (Apart from autodialing!) and includes a TV card and a wireless remote
so I can control some computer driven speakers in my bathroom while bathing
without getting electrocuted!

In Accessories/Communications/Fax there is the fax console, a facility for
sending faxes and another to edit a cover page but none for dialing.

I’ve looked at the modem driver updated it and queried it:-
Control Panel/system/Hardware/Modems/Agere Systems PCI Softmodem
Under the driver tab I had the 2004 driver installed and I updated it (I
wasn’t sure which one to choose from the two for the modem I have. I chose
the one with the latest date driver 2.1.65.0 issued 25/01/2006 - even though
the address seemed odd compared to the others. In the event it didn’t matter
since nothing has changed – I can still fax but can’t still autodial from
Outlook Contacts.

In the diagnostics tab I did a modem query. This was the log:-
11-01-2007 20:00:17.406 - File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\tapisrv.dll, Version
5.1.2600
11-01-2007 20:00:17.406 - File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\unimdm...
