Outlook Address Book requires non-blank email address???

Date: Aug 20, 2008 11:05

In Outlook 2003, B brings up what I will call The Outlook
Address Book, as distinct from the Windows Address Book, and my question
involves the Outlook Address Book.

When sending a fax using Microsoft Fax, the "Address Book" button invokes
the Outlook address book which permits selection of an Outlook Contacts
Folder as a source of addresses, so long as that folder has been suitably
indicated in the properties dialog. However, entries will not appear unless
they have a RECOGNIZABLE e-mail address, which is useless during a fax
operation.

Is there a way to tell the Outlook Address Book to filter the entries based
on fax number (blank or otherwise) and NOT to filter the addresses based on
e-mail?

Thanks for the help.

The Outlook Address Book displays all valid electronic addresses from your
contacts folder, including fax numbers. If yours does not, examine the fax
numbers to determine the cause.

Hi Milly,

I don't want to disagree, but the fact is, MY Outlook Address Book will not
include an entry with a blank email address. If this is non-standard
behavior, then I am overjoyed. Please try the following experiment:

Create a folder with contacts called "Fax Addresses". Be sure that "Show
this folder as an Outlook EMail Address Book" is checked in the "Outlook
Address Book" tab of the properties dialog.

Add four contacts named "XX", "EX", "XF", and "EF" as follows:
XX - blank Email, blank Business Fax
EX - non-blank Email, blank Business Fax
XF - blank Email, non-blank Business Fax
EF - non-blank Email, non-blank Business Fax

B

Select Fax Addresses in the upper right corner of the dialog.

MY Outlook Address Book only shows EX and EF, meaning XX and XF are not
displayed and I interpret this behavior as a result of the blank email
field. Do your results agree with mine?

I had to try this, though I didnt create a seperate Fax folder
Entered a contact with only name & fax number, saved
Crt+Shft+B
Bought up the address book with that contact shown, allthough the email
address was shown as 'name+fax #' and display name was shown as
'name+(buiness Fax)'

Hi DL,

Well, that casts suspicion on my setup but it still doesn't explain it. I
am using Outlook 2003 on Windows XP Professional. You?

Works the same here as it does for both DL and Milly and that's using
Outlook 2007 on Vista Ultimate, Outlook 2003 on XP Pro, and Outlook 2000 on
Windows 98SE. A contact with only a name and a valid Business Fax number
appear on all three when clicking "To:" on a new Fax message.
