Is it slow after a reboot? Mine is also slow at times but a reboot helps. I
don't know of a sure-fire fix at this time.
My message count is correct to the best of my knowledge - I'm pretty sure it's
a different, unrelated issue.

Reboot helps ( and is the only way to get the message count to update
correctly ) but it quickly degrades...
