Frequent PST Corruption - Not Closed Properly

Running Vista SP1 with Outlook 2007 and all the latest updates. (Not using
Exchange).

Frequently (daily or more often) when opening Outlook, I get a balloon
message that says the Data File did not close properly and is automatically
being checked. After a few minutes I get a msg indicating the file is ok.

On a number of occasions have run SCANPST against the file and sometimes
errors are found and fixed. But in short order I will again see this
problem. I have tried to wait a period of time after closing Outlook before
shutting down the computer, but without some indication of an OL process
that might be keeping the file open, this hasn't seemed to help.

I do Hot sync with my Treo 650, but this does not seem to be the issue, as
the errors occur whether or not a Hot sync has been done.

TIA
Al

The .PST is on my laptop. Thanks for your suggestion on trying Safe Mode
(w/o addins) - will give that a try.

DL,

I've looked to ensure Outlook.exe was not running, but wonder which of the
(many) other processes might be using the PST. Don't know if there's a
cross-ref utility that would show which apps are using a file.

Perhaps the problem is caused during the regular OL closing process - maybe
by an addin. Will try Vangard's suggestion to try OL w/o the addins for
some trouble-shooting.

Thanks
Al

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.
7. Infuzer

You can download a small utility called Knockout from
http://www.sunflowerhead.com - you may know the Author of the software -
Jensen Harris of Office UI fame. The utility is very helpful for letting
you know when Outlook is running.
