Empty DeletedItems" Folder

Author: Thom Little

In Outlook 2007 when I try to ...
Empty "Deleted Items" Folder
... I receive an error message of ...
The folder is full
... and if I select all the messages as a group I can delete them.

I ran the Diagnostics and they found nothing. I ran the Repair from the
installation menu and it reported success.

It seems likely that there is some work file that Outlook is using that is
not being deleted or cleared properly.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
Is there documentation on what Outlook files should or should not be present
in ...
Temporary Internet Files
... ?

How many items are in the deleted items folder and are you using an exchange
mailbox or a pst?

that's not too many - the folder can usually hold into the 10's of
thousands, provided its not a pst you used with Outlook 2000 or earlier.

It is logically inconsistent that it is referring to the PST "file" itself
since I am attempting to remove files.

My assumption is that there is a work file that is only used when you choose
the "empty" option and not when you do a selected deletion.

It is likely that this file is in Temporary Internet Files folder.

Which of those files can I delete?

I don't believe that's true.

You can delete anything in that folder that you choose. I don't think it
will have an effect on your particular issue.

Have you tried using the Inbox repair Tool on your PST?

I hadn't run it. I just did after you suggested it. It identified a number
of problems and I had it correct them. I then logged-on again. The error
message still appears when I attempt to Empty "Deleted Items" Folder.

I went back through my backups of the PST file until I got to run that did
not cause the problem (six weeks old).

I then ran the mailbox cleanup, archived a large number of files, and
compacted the PST file.

I then got to search the other sources to get as many of the messages over
the last six weeks as I could.

It is now rebuilt and operating correctly.

Thanks for the lead.

It was still damaged and could not be repaired.

I created a new PST file and archived the old one entirely. I then spent
about 8 hours migrating important information from the archive to the new
PST file.

It seems to be working now.

I hope you didn't acually use Outlook's autoarchive for this. Perhaps what
you mean by "archive" and what Outlook means aren't the same thing.
