Systray Icon Tied to Opening Sidenote on Startup

Selecting the option to "Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the
taskbar" appears to automatically open a new Side Note (default) or OneNote
itself on start up. And I don't see any option for separating systray icon
from automatic open feature.

Can anyone explain why these two functions are locked together? Why can't we
chose to show the icon in systray without automatically opening a window on
startup or vice versa?

It never does that for me. What version of OneNote are you using?
What's in your Startup folder in Windows?

Ben, 'm using OneNote 2007 (12.0.6211.1000) SP1. My Startup folder contains
shortcut for "OneNote 2007 Screen Clipper and Launcher" which runs "Microsoft
Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXE" /tsr"

I assume this must have been in Startup since I installed Office 2007 months
ago, but maybe not...

Anything starting on your machine that might be invoking Windows Key | N
when startup runs?

Not that I can find. However, the problem seems to be fixed now. Two more
strange (unexpected) things occurred. I set option to NOT display OneNote
icon in notification area and STILL a note opened on startup. Then I set icon
back to display in systray and did NOT get a note opening on startup for the
first time in a couple weeks.

So things appear to be back to normal, but I'm not sure why! Maybe changing
the setting fixed something in the registry? Thanks for taking an interest in
my issue.

I'm glad the issue is gone. What you reported (disabling the icon and
still seeing the new SN upon startup) still points to what Ben was
suggesting - somewhere among the many places where programs can be set to
run upon startup was a separate shortcut doing that. If the problem
recurs, you should check in all of the normal startup places to find any
additional OneNote icons.

Okay, now I'm more clear on what was suggested. Must have been in the
registry then because it was not in Startup folder. If it happens again, I'll
check registry. Thanks.

Want to know where OneNote is starting from at boot time?

Click this link -> http://live.sysinternals.com/
Click to run AutoRuns.exe
Click the "Everything" tab in AutoRuns
Click the binoculars and search for onenote

I found 3 -- (1) the Startup Folder, (2) HKCR registry key, (3) Print
Monitors
