I'm still trying to tget to the bottom of this, but it appears to be to do
with the caching of files.
My ON files are on the server, but when I try to open them directly on the
server (from a wks) I get the old problem with it asking for a password,
even though there is none (indicative of cache/offline files problems).
If I copy them onto the wks, I can open them fine, however.
I've cleared the cache on the wks. What the h5ll else is there to do? This
thing drives me nuts!
Cheers,
Ferg.

Do you by any chance have a web server running on the same server? If
so, go to windows update and install the latest updates for
Office/OneNote. There was a bug that was recently fixed that was causing
OneNote to fail opening notebooks on servers that also have a web server
running.

Aaaah?? Tell me it's not true! They actually managed to fix that problem,
finally?? ;-)
Yes, it's an Exchange server also, so suffers from that problem.
However, ON is totally up to date. I'm trying to find mention of such an
update for ON, but I'm finding only forum discussions where you say "one is
coming soon". :-)
I try this 'workaround' where you open the URL instead (I've published the
My Notebook folder in IIS now) but it tells me "The folder ' http://server/my
notebook' isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable
location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a \ or /."
Thanks for your help Ilya.

Most interesting!
Is there an update which fixes things in OneNote?
When did it appear?
Any further information on this in any blog or so?
TIA
Rainald

The update was released this past Tuesday. It has a security fix in it,
so it is listed as a security update, but it also includes a number of
SharePoint performance updates and some bug fixes.

I don't think there is a blog entry, but you should be able to find the
information if you search for the KB number (sorry, don't have it handy)
on Microsoft's support site.

Thanks a lot for the info, Ilya.
I meanwhile had checked the list of updates and the thing in question is
already installed.
A double click on the list of installed update brought up a msgbox with
the info.
For the lurkers:
It's KB950130.

Thanks a lot for the info, Ilya!
Good to hear that possibly some of the oddities with storage of
ON-notebooks on devices connected over the internet might be a thing of
the past.
Let's watch the postings complaining about problems ;-)

Yesh, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950130 clearly states the issue on
David Rasmussen's blog about it.
I'll check whether I have that update on the laptop......
Thanks Ilya.

Well this thread seems to have been abandoned by everyone except me, so I'll
talk to myself and anyone else reading this with a similar problem.
I have put these ON files into a folder on a mapped drive on which I also
make offline copies of some of the folders (obviously not the ON folders or
any containing these folders). It doesn't let me open them if I do that.
However, if I put them onto a completely different folder that it accessed
through the e$ share, it works happily and has that little green tick in the
corner.
So it seems if you enable offline folders of any sort through the same
mapped drive on whcih your ON files are, it won't work.
I'm probably saying something you all already know, but at least I've just
realised it. Woohoo!

For what it's worth, I've found that we get much better performance when
we open the files by addressing the server directly instead of using
mapped shares.
Instead of:
O:\notebook.one
We use:
\\ 192.168.1.2\share\notebook.one
And it seems both more reliable and noticeably faster; even though the
notebook.one file is in the exact same place on the server.
