Every time I create a new section, either at the top level or in a section
group, as soon as I attempt to (re)name the new section ON crashes. It
restarts and sometimes the new section is there ready for me, but other
times it's "blank" and I have to delete it and start over. Usually on the
second, but sometimes third attempt it allows me to (re)name the section and
move on. I believe the product is fully patched and I've tried repairing it
through Add/Remove Programs.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

Do you let Dr. Watson (the program which appears when the crash occurs)
report the crash to Microsoft? If it's a new bug in SP1, sending the
report to MS will let the dev folks see what is causing the issue and will
give them the information needed to evaluate this issue for the next SP.

It's easy enough to replicate. Here's the Event Log info from my latest
crash.
Bucket 594429946, bucket table 1, faulting application onenote.exe, version
12.0.6211.1000, stamp 46d4b147, faulting module onmain.dll, version
12.0.6215.1000, stamp 470fe0d0, debug? 0, fault address 0x001e336b.
Thanks,
Tom

Assuming you're only using a local .ONE file and not a shared file or a
file located on another server somewhere - have you tried deleting the
OneNote cache file and letting OneNote recreate it?

It appears that there isn't yet any data uploaded for that bucket. Could
I ask you to reproduce the error once more, and send the error report again?

I'm not 100%% sure we're letting that traffice get out through our firewalls,
but here's another attempt. I'm sort of surprised to even see the request
to send info, but since I got the popup I thought just maybe the message was
getting sent too. (blocked by request per customer audit)
1. Created new Section in a Sub-Section. ON crashed.
Bucket 594429946, bucket table 1, faulting application onenote.exe, version
12.0.6211.1000, stamp 46d4b147, faulting module onmain.dll, version
12.0.6215.1000, stamp 470fe0d0, debug? 0, fault address 0x001e336b.
2. ON restarted and I was able to rename section.
Let me know if you see it. I may have a way around the block. Thanks,
Tom K.

Wow, that's a scary thing to do. I followed those instructions and only a
couple of my notes were back in ON when I opened it. I couldn't deal with
the stress of watching ON try to recover the others so I shut it down and
copied my backed up original cache back in place.
Nice try, but I'm too chicken to go through with that. :-)
Thanks anyway,
Tom K.

I see the data here. It looks like the section is being modified while
OneNote is trying to create it. Normally, this shouldn't be possible,
but there have been a few odd cases where this can happen. Most commonly
this happens when windows offline files is involved. If you are using
windows offline files, either for the location where your cache is
stored or for the notebook location, make sure that Windows is fully
patched, both on the client and on the server.
