MS Update Again Erases Print to OneNote

I'd avoided installing any security updates for a long time after my
last experience with this issue. However, I made the grievous error
this morning of installing KB950130 which, once again, completely
destroyed my ability to print to OneNote. I've noticed others are
having the same problem. It is extremely difficult to fix. Some
people can simply reinstall the printer, but this never worked for me.

Note to MS Programmers: this is IT. I'll never install another
security update for Office or OneNote (note: I only run OneNote,
refusing to use any other Office product) from you because I no longer
have any faith in your programming ability. After all, how hard is it
NOT TO DISABLE a working program.

I tried simply uninstalling KB950130 which worked. I can now Print to
OneNote. So, if you're really lucky this time, that's all you have to
do. Just uninstall this broken security update. I maintain this is a
sad commentary on Microsoft's inability to fix both security and
programming problems in a program without breaking it.

I've installed the update as well, but still have the OneNote printer.
Could you tell me a bit more about your system configuration? Specifically:
Which OS are you using? Which service pack?
Are you logging on to your computer as a standard user or as an admin?
Is the computer part of a domain administered by an IT deparment, or is
it a home computer?
Do you have any other printers installed? If so, which one is the default?
Is there anything else unusual about your computer's configuration?

Also, if you re-install the update, does the OneNote printer disappear
again?

AFAICS this has nothing to do with the problem of the ON printer.
IMHO this is just *coincidence*!!

I have this update installed on more than one computer and it does not
cause any problem on my system(s).

Ilya, as I might have your ear:
Just a few minutes ago I replied to a posting of Ben's.
Let me repeat it here:

"Ben,
IMHO this is just one more appearance of the *in*general* problem of the
"lost SendToOneNote printer" which appears several times per day (or at
least several times per week) in this NG.

IMHO it would be high time to
- collect together all of the messages appearing here;
- collect together all of the solutions having been posted here over the
time;
- have the developers' team investigate the issue and provide solutions;
- create an FAQ paper for the time until this issue will be solved.

Honestly speaking:
I'm really fed up with hearing of this problem day by day.

Unfortunately, so far all we have is bits and pieces of information, and
not anything concrete. We know that the printer often disappears after
installing updates, but that's about it. It's happened on both XP and
Vista. It does not appear to be specific to updates for Office, but I
can't be sure. We don't know if uninstalling and reinstalling an update
that caused the print driver to disappear will cause it to disappear
again. I haven't been able to get the print driver to disappear on any
of my computers, so for now I can only go on what people post here. I
don't even know what to ask people about their computers that'd help in
tracking down the problem.

If you have anything that you think might be helpful, by all means,
please post it. But until we have a way to get the printer to disappear
on demand, or at least some solid leads, progress is going to be slow at
best.

Hi Ilya,

Perhaps I can help. I have experienced this problem with 2 different PCs
today. My wife's is XP Home, and mine is Vista Business. In both cases, we
found today that our OneNote printer had disappeared. Also, in both cases, by
going back to the System Restore point before the latest Windows Update, the
printer returned.

My first concern is to put back as much of the Update as I can without
breaking the printer again, since the updates were security related. Would
you recommend that I try manually selecting to install all of the 9/9/08
updates except for the one (KB950130) specifically for OneNote?

A further update - after backing up to the Restore Point before the update,
and getting the printer back, I reisntalled all updates except the one for
OneNote. and the printer is still there - on both the XP and Vista machines.

This happens regularly to me. I have learned that the easiest fix is to
insert my OneNote installation disk and run "Repair" - the print driver comes
back! It's frustrating, but not fatal.
