Corruption and Sync Errors over NAS

Let me start by saying that I've used OneNote 2007 (and 2007 SP1) for about a
year with no problems. Previously, I had my OneNote notebooks stored in a
shared folder on my home desktop. I would then access this folder from
school over VPN with my laptop or from my desktop directly (if I was at
home). This all worked perfectly.

I decided to save some electricity (and not run my desktop all the time) and
setup a cheap NAS (using a linksys "slug"). I have the NAS mapped as a drive
to all my computers. Since doing this I've received messages about the
notebooks being corrupted when trying to sync. These messages would often be
resolved by a subsequent attempt at syncing (but sometimes it took many). My
current workaround is to sync manually (when I start up OneNote and before I
close it).

I have verified that the NAS is working properly. Large files transfered
back and forth have expected MD5 values. The error occurs over local LAN
connections to the NAS and over remote VPN connections. I'm at a loss to
explain this. Is there a reason that the OneNote notebook cannot be shared
on a linux/samba device? As opposed to a shared Windows XP folder which
seems to work perfectly.

David Rasmussen's Blog has a bit about this - that the Samba on the NAS might
not do ReplaceFile() correctly.

Not that I've tried it yet. But that's the only info I really have.

MS should really:
1) advertize the heck out of OneNote
2) give it some web 2.0 features (a-la EverNote)
3) implement cloud storage, sharing and collaboration

Sure would be nice to share ON notebooks over the web without a VPN, right?

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I suppose my next step is to
flash to one of the opensource/linux firmware's for my NAS and then install a
more recent version of Samba.

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with linux, so I'm sure it's going to
be a "fun" learning curve.

I wanted to confirm that the Samba version was causing the issue. My NAS
came installed with an early version of the Samba v3 series which was
released in 2005 (I did not write down the exact build number unfortunately
and have no desire to reset back to factory to find it).

This is somewhat surprising as a lot of NAS devices shipped with Samba v2
which is even older.

Regardless, after much effort and learning on my part I unlocked/hacked the
OS on the NAS and installed Samba 3.2.3 (the latest stable build, released
august 2008).

Suffice it to say that the errors have disappeared!

On another note, while the blog was very helpful, MS should really create a
KB article for this issue and link it to the error message in ON.

Just my two cents.
