Public Folder replication pub.edb and pub.stm are very large on destination server

I am in the process of moving our Exchange 2003 data to another server
using the MS article 822931. We are using Exchange 2003 Standard SP2.

Replicating the public folders to the new server is the first step in the
article. I have followed the instructions closely, but the pub.edb and
pub.stm files on the destination server are quite a bit larger than those
files on the source server. To compare, on the destination server pub.edb
is approx 11GB, and pub.stm is approx. 7GB. On the source server pub.edb is
approx 7GB, and pub.stm is 265MB (yes MB). I am having a hard time
understanding why there is such a discrepancy between the two servers. Can
anyone provide any insight to why this is happening and is there any way to
reduce the size on the destination server? Thanks in advance for any
replies.

Jim
