Netopia Router w/ SBS. NAT & Firewall Question

Author: kemperflow
Date: Jul 15, 2008 20:26

I'm using a Netopia Router and am using the built in firewall with
NAT. I have five external IP's, and I understand how to map those to
the internal NAT'd IP's, the question is..

When I am declaring rules for the firewall for inbound, do I use the
external IP's, or the NAT'd IP's. I guess I'm not sure where NAT fits
in the chain. I'm doing some port mapping between external and
internal, so port 80 on the external IP may map to 5000 on the NAT IP.
I've got it working, but I'm not 100%% I did it right and want to
verify I haven't opened a hole.

As an example:

extern 205.206.207.208 port 80
NAT 192.168.1.1 port 443

Firewall rule on extern or NAT?

2nd. What about outbound filtering? Firewall on extern or NAT?

Thanks in advance!

Moving to sbs2003 Machine accounts not recognized

Author: Fred B.
Date: Jul 11, 2008 02:05

I followed Jeff's Swing procedure for testing a move to SBS2003. Everything
tested sofar works.

Now a test laptop running XP that connected earlier connects just fine. Of
another test machine added later (months later) to the test configuration,
the machine account is not recognized. Changing the network name to the
already existing name triggers the question that the machine account is
already found and if I want to use that. Afterwards no more problems.

Now added another W2000 workstation. This time whatever I do I cannot get
the machine to connect to the machine domain as it keeps telling me there is
no machine domain found. It gave no error on the administrator account in
the user domain. Machine and user domain name are the same in SBS2003. If
loged on locally to the WS I can see in network neigbourhood the server and
other workstations.

Any ideas howto correct this before moving all machines? What can cause a
W2000 workstation not to find the computer domain?

TIA,

Fred

  Folder redirection and backup issues

Author: Fred B.
Date: Jul 10, 2008 01:48

I am studying the pitfalls of moving from SBS2000 to SBS 2003.

We have folder redirection enabled for the my doucments folder to the user's
shared folder.

We know that certain file types are excluded from offline use
synchronisation like .PST and .MDB. However I ran into unexpected behaviour
trying to restore a backup of SBS2K "Users shared folders" to SBS2003 "Users
shared folders". During the backup I received errors that the disk size was
not big enough for the files .PST and .MDB to be restored.

Now this is a 12GB backup file to a disk with 28GB free! If I click ignore
it takes ages to finish but it finishes eventually. Never exceeding the
12GB. The backup and restore is done with Windows Backup.

These files are placed in the location of the redirected my documents,
meaning the servers share for backup reasons. They are not corrupt at the
SBS2000 share, opening and compacting in Outlook or Access gives no errors
or problems.

What is going on here? Can this be safely ignored?

TIA,

Fred

  Microsoft Forefront

Author: Ringo
Date: Jun 29, 2008 08:36

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were with regards to
putting Microsoft Forefront security on a SBS Premium R2 server and
workstations. Is the product ready for prime time? Does it install
well or seriously impact the resources on a SBS lan? Is it cost
effective...or are there better solutions out there?

Also, a side note...does anyone think its necessary to put a Dell
Remote Access card on a server given that you access all those same
features from within the Dell Open Management console? Just
wondering?

Thanks

Ringo

  DNS Error 4515

Author: Conor McEntee
Date: Jun 26, 2008 09:31

Hi
My SBS 2003 server has the following error in the DNS event viewer "The zone
zilcom.local was previously loaded from the directory partition MicrosoftDNS
but another copy of the zone has been found in the directory partition
DomainsDnsZones.Zilcom.local. The DNS Server will ignore this new copy of the
zone. Please resolve this conflict as soon as possible."

My DNS console only lists part of my dns structure but when I run ADSI the
full list shows up under the domaindnszones. The forestdnszones has a heading
of dc=_msdcs.zilcom.com under the CN=MicrosoftDNS. This contains mostly
things to do with ldap and kerberos and lists nothing to do with the
computers on the network.

So if the ADSI utility can list my entire dns structure under the
domaindnszones but my dns console only lists part of this structure then
something has gone astray. The question is can the dns console be brought up
to date with what i see in the adsi utility

I've had this issue as well

Author:
Date: Jun 23, 2008 07:35

I realize this is a very old post, but it was one of the only good results on a google search for the error "The operation was canceled due to an internal error" while trying to change drive letters.

I'm a server admin & was having this exact same issue.

I realized that the reason it wasn't able to change was that the pagefile was on that drive. Moving the pagefile to another drive solved it for me.

Hope this helps someone else :).
