That is bullshit. The standard document mandates that the version
must be sent. It is part of the protocol, and there are really good
reasons for those who dig into the code and read compat.c

Sorry for posting out of thread, not following tech these days.
I can see people mentioning my patch at:
http://www.kramse.dk/files/patches/openssh/openssh-hideversion.patch
but I would have liked it if you would link to
http://www.kramse.dk./projects/unix/opensshhideversion_en.html
- which actually explain a bit more about this patch.
Theo also responeded to this thread, and yes he is correct
there might be problems, but as I have used the same procedure
for removing the version using an editor for version - I became
tired of doing it, made a patch.
I think the problems are minimized by using recent versions
of OpenSSH on both server and client, I think that is what I researched
at the time and 10+ releases of OpenSSH has shown me - it works.
If you need to support a larger userbase, this patch will not be for you.
Maybe when we get to SSH version 3 we can have a better protocol
that doesn't require you to show everything about your system?

This will absolutely NEVER go in.

What part of "necessary for compatibility" do you not understand?
The version string is used by clients and servers to auto-negotiate
with each other for bug and feature compatibility, due to early errors
made in the SSH standard.
You think it works correctly. Yet you don't have a clue what you may
have just broken. If something subtle broke, you would not spot it (I
can tell, because you did not read the code in OpenSSH that looks at
the version string, to see WHY it looks at the version string).
