Can Etch be installed on an SS20?

Author: Chris Andrew

Hi, everybody.

I know the Lenny will not support 32-bit Sparc Stations. Has anyone
successfully booted Etch from a CD and done an install?

Cheers,

Chris.

I know that the Linux kernel does not support multiple CPUs reliably on
sparc32 (and the SS20 can have up to four CPUs; mine has a pair of Ross 180
MHz HyperSPARCs).

Because of the lack of SMP support, I put NetBSD on my SS20, but as far as I
know, Etch out to work. I can't tell you that it works from experience,
though.

(To placate the list, I do have Debian running on an UltraSparc 1/170E, but
I am having some issues with 2.6 kernels recognizing the SCSI controller.
It works fine with a 2.4 kernel though.)

I have eight SS10/512 (Dual-CPU) and one SS20 and the last Release was
Sarge and failed with Etch. Some Kernel related problems...

But if you are happy with an older Kernel, you can roll your own one
(the one from Sarge) and use it under Etch which should work nicely.

Be carefull, if you upgrade from Sarge to Etch, since you will run into
trouble, if your Kernel NEED modules...

I had to compile all needed modules into the kernel.

Hi, guys.

Just trying to install Etch on an SS20. The CD boots, and I select my
keyboard etc, but when it comes to detect the CD properly, it can't be
found. Can anyone remember the solution to this? lsmod indicates
that the esp module and cdrom modules are loaded. I think in the past
the problem has been esp, but I'm sure I got further than this.

Can anyone help?

Cheers,

Chris.

If memory serves me right cdrom is for an IDE CDROM.
You'll need 'sr_mod' for SCSI CDROMs.

Apart from lsmod, run dmesg to see what devices esp detected.

As I had writen, Sarge IS working on the SS10 and SS20 but not Etch.

You should install Sarge onto the machine and then roll your OWN Kernel
with your OWN version number to prevent its removing if you upgrade the
system to Etch, which is the only way, to get Etch installed.

Question: Are you realy sure, you want to install Etch on the machine?
If you do not need the X-Window-System (where Xorg is faster
then XFree86), Sarge runs much faster then Etch for server
use and such.
