  2.6.25-2-686 / ACPI / laptop_mode

Author: Dale
Date: Jul 18, 2008 22:30

Hi all,

To start off with I am running Debian testing and under the 2.6.24 I
not have any problems with 'Advanced power management level' for the
hard drive changing from 254 when on AC to 128 when on battery and
visa versa. Under the 2.6.25-2-686 it would never change from 254
whether on AC or battery.

Well I have had a play with my '/etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf'
file and change a couple settings, the 2 lines I played with are
'CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=0' (changed it from a zero to a one) and
'BATT_HD_POWERMGMT=1' (changed it from a one to 128) and now all seems
to work correctly and the hard drive is now changing from 254 when on
AC to 128 when on battery and visa versa again as it done under the
2.6.24 kernel.

Here is the section I have altered

#
# Should laptop mode tools control the hard drive power management settings?
#
CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=1

  Hibernate: mouse is lost

Author: Carl Fink
Date: Jul 17, 2008 20:20

On my HP DV6100 running Testing with GNOME as the graphical environment, if
I hibernate, either manually from the command line or using the menu, when I
wake the system the mouse is not recognized, even if unplugged and
replugged. Even if I unplug the mouse before hibernating, it is not
recognized when plugged in after waking.

Problem with USB detection? I haven't tried any other peripherals.

Any suggestions?

  Thinkpad 770 memory problem

Author: Isaac MacFarlane
Date: Jul 16, 2008 21:20

Hello all. I have 288MB installed in my system and the BIOS does see it all,
but Debian is only recoginizing 220MB. I tried adding a boot parameter in
GRUB using the mem command, but I ended up with only 64MB after booting. The
command was:

mem=68M@220M

I may be misunderstanding the syntax and have things totally wrong. In fact,
I would say that is likely considering the results. I appreciate any help
you can provide.

Lenny(Etch upgrade) on Thinkpad R61: Fn keys and sound issue

Author: umesh debian
Date: Jul 15, 2008 23:10

Hi All,

I recently upgrade Etch to Lenny using apt-get dist-upgrade after
changing all etch occurrences in sources.list. I am facing problems
that were there is Etch also, mainly the Fn+* keys not working and
sound not working(HDA intel). Had gone through a lot in internet
regrading installing packages such as tpctl, tp_smapi, etc and Alsa
divers for sound. Still i am not able to bring these up on the Laptop.
Alsa already has a bug report regarding problem with HDA intel PCI
sound. is there a workaround?

If anybody has done successful changes for R61 in this regard, please reply.

Regards,
Umesh

  Thinkpad, ATI, hell

Author: Jim McCloskey
Date: Jul 14, 2008 02:20

I made the mistake of buying one of the `linux-ready' Lenovo Thinkpad
T60's a while ago, or rather made the mistake of buying one with an
ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 graphics controller and ever since I've
been in ATI hell.

The radeon driver crashes the X server at startup:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c6a4e]
1: [0xb7f23400]
2: /usr/bin/X11/X(main+0x296) [0x80744c6]
3: /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe0) [0xb7cad450]
4: /usr/bin/X11/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x201) [0x8073a31]

so I rely on ATI's proprietary drivers as packaged for Debian. I have
installed fglrx-driver, fglrx-glx, and fglrx-kernel-src, all at
version 8-6-2 from testing. The kernel version is 2.6.25-2-486 from
the Debian package. But 3D acceleration stubbornly refuses to work:

(EE) fglrx(0): XMM failed to open CMMQS connection.

Applying correct hdparm values on resume

Author: Arthur A
Date: Jul 11, 2008 05:40

Hi list,

I'm using Debian Lenny with Laptop-mode tools that I've configured to
manage my laptop's hd, which is controlled by firmware that gives insane
load cycle values. Thus, I've enabled laptop-mode-tools and it currently
applies a setting of 254 (disabled) when running on AC and 128 (enabled
and aggressive pm settings) when running on battery. This works fine on
boot, and when removing or inserting the AC power. However, upon resume
a setting of 128 is applied regardless of the machine's powerstate.

I believe that laptop-mode is being restarted correctly since if I
remove and reinsert the AC cord the correct hdparm settings (254) are
applied. My guess is that something is also being re-initialized upon
resume from suspend that is over-riding laptop-mode-tools. In any event,
I thought that the simplest fix for this would be to add a script to
/etc/pm/sleep.d/01-hdparm-power-check which would do nothing if going to
sleep, and if resuming would check whether the computer was running on
ac, and if so apply hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda

My problem lies in this second part, as I'm not sure how to correctly do
a check, the rest of it I can steal from other scripts included under
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/
