Now that taking the bus is cheaper than driving, we should raise bus fares?

The press release at the MTA web site: http://mta.net/news_info/press/metro_068.htm
. Guess how much they intend to charge for day passes in 2009. O.k.,
just guess. It's $8!!! The monthly pass goes up from $52 to $120.
Well, I suppose somebody's got to pay for the buses, but I'm wondering
what is going to happen to traffic when people (like me) who own cars
start driving again.

While I strongly believe that $120 per month for a bus pass is a
bargain, I feel that this is going to backfire on MTA.

Most of MTA's riders probably don't earn more than minimum wage, and
many of them only work part time. A jump to $120 per month for a bus
pass may mean that many people won't be able to afford transportation
to work. Fewer people riding the bus means less money for MTA, even
though fares are greatly increased.

Most people who can afford $120 per month for a bus pass can also
afford car payments and probably won't be riding the bus in the first
place.
