I m asking this because this group has helped me in the past in sorting things out

Though my question appear unrelated to the forum, I think it is though
i do not know whether it would fall under "ethical" area or not. If it
doesn't fall in that category, I would think it falls in social
ethics. And I want this question to be answered by only those who
have daughters (I mean your own blood daughters). If you have children
but not daughters, and feel that you can be sensitive about this, then
you may answer. here is the question:

"Is it appropriate for a man who is at least 25 years or more older
(he would not tell me his age but he is retired) to *keep* telling me
how I turned him on starting that it's not just looks but
intelligence, savvy, blah..blah..blah.."

He started with the line "You are so cool; you turned me on" in the
email. I replied saying "Goodbye". Two days later, he sent me an email
elaborating that what he meant was that ...more blah..blah..blah..

(Frankly, I think it was a cop-out explanation and he did what he
did to test me but I am a kind person and so I did not want to say
"Quit it old man" and treated him with sympathetic ears, knowing how
lonely he must be. [Obviously, that was the beginning of my
mistake].

  Wharton Re-engages

Author: Paul Wharton
Date: Jul 22, 2008 20:24

In October of 2007, I announced that my goal for 2008 was going to be
to defeat Hillary Clinton's Presidential bid. I was happy to see her
drive for the Democratic Nomination derailed shortly after my climatic
attack against her reference to Bobby Kennedy's historical
assassination.

I fought hard for that achievement. And, though I had become a
valuable contributor to humanities.philosophy.objectivism, after my
success, I decided to go on an unannounced vacation. But, I'm back
now.

One major factor has changed in my intellectual work. I got a second
job. That has me working every day, with a total of 60 - 65 hours per
week. Not only does my schedule not have me staying up all night to
take advantage of breaking world news, like previously.
Strategically, I am intellectually unreliable, as certain people keep
going on vacations, or calling out--giving me more of a work load.

JIminy Xmas - AS in RL.

I have the skills to run business cat5 networks, and in the suburbs,
there's no permit required.

http://www.ci.buffalo.ny.us/files/1_2_1/city_departments/edpis/FeeSchedule.pdf

However - in the city of buffalo, it's a different story. Low voltage
applications, if I can read their convoluted garbage, will cost me a
$75+ permit just to run a small network. LOW-FREAKING-VOLTAGE.
Nobody ever burned their house down with ethernet except the
occasional absent minded gamer leaving the frying pan on high.

Being about half way through Atlas Shrugged (only got to page 300 the
first time I started reading), it's clear to me, as described in AS,
the role of government in its own desparate search of funding...

Puppet Sock finds a web site

Author: Puppet_Sock

Well, it's got interesting pictures. Have not done any checking
of their data.

http://www.gapminder.org/

And click on the "go directly to graph" link.
Was pointed at this by Lubos Motl's blog.

http://motls.blogspot.com/

He's got a link under "Graph of the Day" that has data back
to the 1800's. I have not quite figured out how to get to it from
the gapminder web site. The one directly from there only shows
from 1950 onward.

It shows a set of
data, animated year by year, of CO2 per capita vs GNP per
capita. It's fascinating. The lesson is pretty clear: Except
for a few very special cases, increasing per capita GNP is
pretty much the same as increasing per capita CO2.

Human rationality is a subjective faculty

Author: acar
Date: Jul 19, 2008 21:11

The subjective basis of "rationality" is well demonstrated by the fact
that all reasoning departs from assumptions (axioms). Those
foundational assumptions are assumptions about what one sees, hears,
smells, tastes and touches. But our "beliefs" about those sensations
are still individual assumptions. The subjective basis of reasoning is
not contradicted by the reliability, consistency and reproducibility
of what we have assumed about the physical phenomenon -- because all of
those judgments are subjective determinations ("subjective" because
the judgment happens in the mind of the subject as opposed to a
judgment that is externally generated) with the only "objective"
parameter being an inter subjective consensus.

But as Mark N. pointed out months ago -- the consensus is no more than
an aggregate of subjective judgments. If so, why should the consensus
be considered "objective" and thus believed to provide better...

  Intrinsic rights

Author: Malrassic Park
Date: Jul 19, 2008 21:03

Do humans have intrinsic rights? Or do they have extrinsic rights? Is
this a false alternative, in that the status of rights is not defined
as either extrinsic or intrinsic? If human rights derive from the
nature of man qua rational being, then doesn't this define them as
intrinsic?

  The purpose of torture

Author: Malrassic Park
Date: Jul 19, 2008 07:52

The war on terrorism is outside the reach of normal morality. The
torture of terrorists is an intrinsic right of nations that have been
deeply affected by terrorist acts. Torture may or may not be effective
in achieving specific extrinsic goals such as acquiring information
from terrorists. However, the purpose of torture is not necessarily to
gain information, that is just the icing on the cake. The purpose of
torture is the torture itself. Thus arguments against torture, which
often point to its ineffectiveness, fall by the wayside.

  The Arrival

Price is a common word that most do not even give passing thought to.
The word in and of itself is fairly innocuous, perhaps even benign.
Proving this concept is fairly simple.

Function:
noun

Middle English pris, from Anglo-French, from Latin pretium price,

  Brother Obama

Author: Ray
Date: Jul 18, 2008 11:00

From this speech:

http://www.usconstitution.net/obama.html

[It is that fundamental belief, it is that fundamental belief, I am my
brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper that makes this country work. It's
what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together
as one American family.]
