  Madalena's age

Author: Tauser

Father Owen Lee in his magisterial book "Wagner and the Wonder of Art"
notes the Classic underpinnings in 'Die Meistersinger'....the
convention of a younger girl with an older man is mirrored by the
courting of a young man with an older woman. This is a convention in
comedy that traces its roots in Roman works of Terence and Plautus.

So I would argue that Madalena is much older than David.

  About the Goodall Mastersingers

As regulars know, I'm prevented by contract (quite understandably) from
posting my reviews on the group, and won't do so here. However, there's
been so much interest expressed that I did want to give people some idea
of how I felt. The more so, as things are crowded in the mag this month,
and while I was generously given more space, I still felt it wasn't
enough for seasoned Wagner junkies like us. So I hastily redrafted some
of my original notes into more readable form, substantially different
enough from the printed form to keep me out of trouble, and I hope
they'll be of some interest -- if, that is, you haven't bought it
already! A couple of you may recognise details you gave or confirmed,
for which again, many thanks.

I'll leave out the stuff I wrote introducing the recording, explaining
where it was from, why it was so special and the hunt for some kind of
restorable copy, since Peter Moores' original developed print-through
--
that we most of us know, I think. The text would lead on from there:

"So was the result worth it? Unquestionably yes. Let

  Barenboim vs Barenboim Tristan DVD

Author: MichaelH
Date: Jul 2, 2008 20:10

As of July 8th 2008, there will be two Tristan DVDs conducted by
Daniel Barenboim on the market.

Both are Bayreuth productions.

One was staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle with Rene Kollo and Johanna
Meier. (1983)

The other was staged by Heiner Müller with Siegfried Jerusalem and
Waltraud Meier. (1995)

Any recommendations of one DVD over the another?

BTW, I have a Jerusalem/Meier/Barenboim CD recording, which I love.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Regarding this Hunding business, the argument put forward is an
interesting one even if not wholly convincing. In the end it may be
much ado about nothing. Really, the distinction between "with a
