Having just acquired the Decca Bayreuth box, I've rushed to listen to
Sawalisch's Tannhäuser...what a mess! Not because of the exceptional
conducting, the legendary singers, but for that Wieland compulsion of
"""improving""" the early operas, not just filling them with several
cuts, but editing them (probably to make them more fluent, with a less
"number-opera" quality).
So, the overture begins as usual and, by that exact point where occurs
the change between the 1847 and the 1875 version, for some bars, it
goes like the 1847 one...only for a little while, because it then
changes abruptly into the 1861/75 Bacchanal!
This condition (that's the exact word I want to use) lasts until
almost the very last bars of the Bacchanal...that are omitted, (i.e.,
the last woodwind/strings alternating chords (!!??)), the music going
straight to "Geliebter sag', wo weilt dein Sinn?" (1861/75 version),
only to be changed again after the 1st Tannhäuser lines, to the
1845/47 version!!.

Here is the URL for the New York Times article on the new direction of
Bayreuth:

I won¹t copy the article here. It¹s too depressing.
The print edition of this article included a truly incredible photograph
from a production of ³Meistersinger² by Katharina. If I hadn¹t seen it I
wouldn¹t have believed it. For better or worse, the picture is not included
in the online version.
The article notes that 30%% of Bayreuth¹s budget comes from federal and state
subsidies, and that the politicians are strongly represented in the
committee that chooses the Bayreuth directors. As Mike has pointed out,
that tends to shield the directors from the reactions of critics and
audiences, and thus is partly responsible for the trashy productions.

Dear List,
I'm looking for a good anthology of Wagner's writings, including early
drafts of the Ring, and perhaps other texts of his on the Ring, early
and late. Besides the William Ashton Ellis series (which is too big
-- and does it have the early drafts?), I can only find Wagner on
Music and Drama, edited by Albert Goldman and Evert Sprinchorn, which
seems to be mainly short excerpts. I'm looking for something to use
as a text book in a college course on the Ring. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help!
