Bayreuth Festival 2008: die Taube schwebt

Author: Derrick Everett
Date: Jul 22, 2008 04:15

In only three days from now the Bayreuth Festival 2008 is scheduled to
open with a new production of 'Parsifal'. I am sure that the regular
participants in this group have already begun the obligatory period of
prayer and fasting that traditionally precedes such events ;-)

Rehearsal pictures have been released to the press and posted on the
newly redesigned Bayreuth Festival web site:

>

It is reported that this production will not feature any dead rabbits but
only a dead swan (see pictures).

The Norwegian director Stefan Herheim is 38. His previous experience of
directing Wagner opera was a 'Rhinegold' for the Bergen Festival two
years ago, which was not well received by Wagnerians. I did very much
enjoy, however, Herheim's production of Handel's 'Giulio Cesare in
Egitto' (Julius Caesar) for the Norwegian opera, as performed in the last
two seasons at the old opera house in Oslo (which has now closed and been
replaced by a splendid modern opera house, down by the harbour). This
witty and highly successful production was filled with visual references
both to the old house and to the new house.

Neither Cosima nor the Bethmann family were Jewish

Author: fpnftra15

I have been directed to this group by Mr. Kimberley Cornish.

Apparently a number of people have a fixed idea that Cosima Wagner and
the Bethmann family must have been Jewish.

Not so.

A very tiring discussion that I've conducted with Mr. Cornish on the
Answers.com website has now been locked by the management. By that
time, most of what I had to say, I had said.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_the_Bethmann_family_of_bankers_in_the_article_The_J...

Even now I am still discovering new falsehoods in Mr. Cornish's
statements, for example the claim that the "1901-1906 Jewish
Encyclopedia entry" confirms that the Bethmanns were a Jewish family.
(It does no such thing, of course.)

Difficult to believe that, as a scholar trained to go directly to the
sources and check and double check, this could have been an
inadvertent oversight on his part.

I am still scratching my head as to what agenda it is that Mr. Cornish
might be pursuing... I have some guesses but would welcome input from
people who have observed him in discussion for longer than me.

  Madalena's age

Author: Tauser
Date: Jul 6, 2008 08:23

Father Owen Lee in his magisterial book "Wagner and the Wonder of Art"
notes the Classic underpinnings in 'Die Meistersinger'....the
convention of a younger girl with an older man is mirrored by the
courting of a young man with an older woman. This is a convention in
comedy that traces its roots in Roman works of Terence and Plautus.

So I would argue that Madalena is much older than David.

  About the Goodall Mastersingers

Author: Mike Scott Rohan

As regulars know, I'm prevented by contract (quite understandably) from
posting my reviews on the group, and won't do so here. However, there's
been so much interest expressed that I did want to give people some idea
of how I felt. The more so, as things are crowded in the mag this month,
and while I was generously given more space, I still felt it wasn't
enough for seasoned Wagner junkies like us. So I hastily redrafted some
of my original notes into more readable form, substantially different
enough from the printed form to keep me out of trouble, and I hope
they'll be of some interest -- if, that is, you haven't bought it
already! A couple of you may recognise details you gave or confirmed,
for which again, many thanks.

I'll leave out the stuff I wrote introducing the recording, explaining
where it was from, why it was so special and the hunt for some kind of
restorable copy, since Peter Moores' original developed print-through
--
that we most of us know, I think. The text would lead on from there:

"So was the result worth it? Unquestionably yes. Let

  Barenboim vs Barenboim Tristan DVD

Author: MichaelH
Date: Jul 2, 2008 20:10

As of July 8th 2008, there will be two Tristan DVDs conducted by
Daniel Barenboim on the market.

Both are Bayreuth productions.

One was staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle with Rene Kollo and Johanna
Meier. (1983)

The other was staged by Heiner Müller with Siegfried Jerusalem and
Waltraud Meier. (1995)

Any recommendations of one DVD over the another?

BTW, I have a Jerusalem/Meier/Barenboim CD recording, which I love.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Another final word on this Hunding business ...

Regarding this Hunding business, the argument put forward is an
interesting one even if not wholly convincing. In the end it may be
much ado about nothing. Really, the distinction between "with a

Thoughts on the Altec Lansing Im600 Ipod speaker

Music to our ears (and hearts) .....Thoughts on the AItec Lansing
Im600

The world seemed to change and improve a little , with the invention
of the ipod.

For as long as we have music in our lives , we can endure so many
other things life sometimes throws our way.

With such a wonderful device as a Mp3 player able to hold thousands of
songs our lives became a little better. New technology has brought us
Zunes, Sansa, Iriver and Disney jumping on the band wagon to bring us
a whole range of choices.

We recently purchased a 80 G Ipod for our 13 year old son and he has
discoved that he can place thousands of songs or some 60 full length
movies on his player, now thats incredible !

Perhaps , some of you will remember when we had and owned eight
tracks , and then tapes and then Cds and DVDs, and where are those
fond memories and icons of technology heading , basically they are all
reduced to a small, tiny hard drive placed in the palm of ones hand .
