[Regression] MIME header encoding is broken in VM 8.0.11

Author: Ulrich Mueller
Date: Sep 15, 2008 07:16

Hi,

it seems that somewhere between VM 8.0.9 and 8.0.11, MIME (RFC 1522)
encoding of headers broke:

VM 8.0.9 would encode the word "Rückstoßdämpfung" in the Subject line as
follows:

=?iso-8859-1?Q?R=FCcksto=DFd=E4mpfung?=

which is still somewhat readable to the unaided eye. In VM 8.0.11 this
now becomes the following:

R=?iso-8859-1?B?/A==?=cksto=?iso-8859-1?B?3w==?=d=?iso-8859-1?B?5A==?=mpfung

Setting vm-mime-encode-headers-type to Q doesn't help much:

R=?iso-8859-1?Q?=FC?=cksto=?iso-8859-1?Q?=DF?=d=?iso-8859-1?Q?=E4?=mpfung

If I interpret RFC 1522 correctly, the method of VM 8.0.11 is plain
wrong here, since an encoded-word must be surrounded by white space and
is not allowed to start in the middle of a word (RFC 1522 section 5):

| Ordinary ASCII text and encoded-words may appear together in the same
| header field. However, an encoded-word that appears in a header field
| defined as "*text" MUST be separated from any adjacent encoded-word or
| "text" by linear-white-space.

I hope the following patch fixed it?

  buglet (?) in qp-decode.c

Author: Ralf Fassel

When a quoted-printable message is incorrectly terminated at EOF:

p;

=0A=0A=0A=
--=_mixed 002D08B5C1257475_=--

(missing newline before the separator) qp-decode barfs:

Error: line 758: '^@' is something other than line break or hex digit after = in quoted-printable encoding

and continues to read into the invalid buffer contents.

IMHO, if EOF is encountered, it simply should stop processing and
issue no error message:

  replace-in-string bug

Author: José Miguel Figueroa
Date: Jun 11, 2008 15:50

I'm using a new version (1.4rc3) of Aquamacs Emacs on OS X, based on
GNU Emacs 22.2.50.2.

When VM starts I get the following error message:

Warning: replace-in-string called with 4 arguments, but accepts only 3

I've traced this down to the following:

1) the file color-theme.el (which comes with Aquamacs Emacs) defines
replace-in-string taking only 3 arguments

2) vm-rfaddons.el checks to see if replace-in-string is defined, and
if not defines one which takes 4 arguments, which is then called a
number of times.

Could I suggest changing the name of this function to vm-replace-in-
string to avoid such conflicts?

Many thanks!

José

Should not write the code point of a character to INBOX

Author: Yuning Feng
Date: May 23, 2008 14:53

Robert,

As you can see from my previous posts, I use some non-latin characters
in mails in my daily life. There is a problem with VM if there are
multibyte characters in the headers.

After hours of debugging, I was able to extract some information of
the problem. When quitting, VM did `vm-stuff-attributes', and inside
that function, `insert-before-markers', to insert the X-VM-v5-Data. I
had a mail with 2 characters e8 b0 83 e8 af 95 (hex, utf-8) in the
subject. What VM tried to insert (as the argument of `insert-before-
marker'), was 8c03 8db5, the code points of those 2 characters. For
some reason, only 03 b5 was written to the INBOX buffer, and finally
saved. In a later session when VM tried to update the mails summary by
reading X-VM-v6-Data in INBOX, the subject containg 03 b5 showed as an
unreadable annoying string.

I guess the utf-8 codes of characters are to be written to INBOX
instead of their code-points? Could you have a look at the code and
see if it is buggy?

Thanks very much!

Yu Ning

  feature request: B-encoding in headers

Author: Yuning Feng
Date: May 21, 2008 23:51

If I understand the code correctly, the current code implements header
encoding in vm-rfaddons.el:vm-mime-encode-headers, and Q-encoding is
the only encoding method. It would be better if B-encoding is
supported also. It seems Gmail requires B-encoding of the subject
field for gb2312/gbk (2 charsets for zh-CN, should not limited to
those 2) characters to be contained there.
