For me compilation runs fine. I had configure'd with enabled font
backend.

You could try to 'make clean' and then update again ...

BTW, how comes that on your GNU/Linux system _BSD_SOURCE is defined?
Even in Mac OS X, which *is* based on FreeBSD, this is not defined ...

It is defined in src/s/gnu-linux.h, but it seems to be cruft (the
comment there says it's redundant for glibc based systems, and I doubt
that anyone compiles Emacs on a libc5 system nowadays).
